Dr Ian Matthews

Dr Ian Matthews is a highly dedicated Cardiologist who provides comprehensive care for patients experiencing a wide range of cardiovascular conditions. With a reassuring and patient-centred approach, he focuses on delivering personalised treatment plans that address both general cardiac health and complex heart rhythm disorders. Dr Matthews is committed to helping his patients understand their diagnoses and feel supported throughout their healthcare journey.

His clinical practice encompasses all aspects of general cardiology, with a particular interest in arrhythmia management, syncope, and cardiac device management. As a procedural Specialist, Dr Matthews is highly skilled in the implantation and ongoing management of cardiac electronic devices, including pacemakers, defibrillators, and loop recorders. He also performs advanced cardiac resynchronisation therapy procedures to help optimise heart function and improve quality of life for those with heart failure.

Dr Matthews began his medical journey by completing an undergraduate degree in Biomedical Science, followed by his medical degree at the University of Queensland, graduating in 2008. He undertook extensive postgraduate training in internal medicine and cardiology across several major tertiary centres. In 2016, he achieved his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP). To further refine his expertise, he subsequently completed a dedicated two-year fellowship specialising in cardiac implantable electronic devices.
