Dr Charlton obtained his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery from the University of New South Wales in 1982. Following his initial medical training in Newcastle, he relocated to the United Kingdom to complete his postgraduate General Practice training. He further advanced his academic and clinical expertise by earning a Doctor of Medicine, completing a doctoral thesis focused on asthma care in general practice. Dr Charlton is a Member of the Royal College of General Practitioners and holds the academic title of Associate Professor.

Throughout his career, Dr Charlton has maintained a strong commitment to clinical research and evidence-based medicine. Having previously served as a Research Fellow in General Practice, he has developed a deep clinical interest in respiratory health and musculoskeletal medicine.
