A/Prof Gavin Wright is a Consultant Thoracic Surgeon specialising in Lung Cancer with over 25 years of experience. He is the current Director of Surgical Oncology at St Vincent's Hospital and also works at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and The Royal Melbourne Hospital. He is Research & Education Lead for Lung Cancer at the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre. He is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Melbourne Department of Surgery. A/Prof Wright completed his medical degree at the University of Melbourne in 1988 and became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 1999.
His current clinical practice focuses heavily on minimally invasive and robotic surgical techniques for lung-sparing surgery for lung cancer, offering shorter recovery times. He also has expertise in complex major surgery for lung cancer, thymoma, mesothelioma and other thoracic tumours. Outside of thoracic oncology, A/Prof Wright's clinical practice also involves the treatment of lung conditions including pectus chest deformities and emphysema.
In addition to his clinical work, A/Prof Wright remains active in research and has published over 150 peer-reviewed journal articles and two book chapters. He is both nationally and internationally recognised for his work surrounding lung cancer and has conducted multiple clinical trials.
