About Dr Vasim Farooq

Dr Vasim Farooq is a Consultant Cardiologist and Interventional Cardiologist in Cardiff, seeing patients privately at Spire Cardiff Hospital and in the NHS at the University Hospital of Wales. He assesses and treats chest pain, angina, suspected coronary artery disease, palpitations, breathlessness, dizziness, blackouts, heart murmurs and cholesterol problems. His practice also includes preventive cardiology, follow-up after heart attack, coronary angiography, also known as a coronary angiogram, angioplasty and stent treatment, aortic stenosis, TAVI, and patent foramen ovale, PFO, closure for selected patients after otherwise unexplained stroke.

Dr Farooq’s practice includes general cardiology, preventive cardiology and advanced interventional cardiology. He has extensive experience in complex coronary artery disease and has performed more than 3,000 coronary angioplasty procedures, most using minimally invasive wrist access. He uses advanced intravascular imaging techniques, including IVUS and OCT, to guide treatment decisions in complex coronary artery disease.

His structural heart work includes transcatheter aortic valve implantation, TAVI, for patients with aortic stenosis or narrowing of the aortic valve. He also performs PFO closure in carefully selected patients following otherwise unexplained stroke.

Preventive cardiology, also known as preventative cardiology, focuses on reducing a patient’s future risk of angina, heart attacks, strokes and heart failure by identifying and treating risk factors early. This includes cholesterol management, blood pressure assessment, family history of heart disease, lifestyle risk factors and cardiovascular risk assessment.

He qualified in medicine from the University of Manchester in 2000 and became a Member of the Royal College of Physicians in 2004. He was later awarded a PhD from Erasmus University Rotterdam, where his research focused on the management of complex coronary artery disease.

I recently booked an appointment for my daughter to see Dr Farooq. She had been ill for about 6. months with various symptoms that made her feel like she was having a heart attack. My daughter who was only just 18 had high anxiety and this had held her back from going to school and learning to drive. When we met Dr Farooq, his gentle nature and the time he gave my daughter just listening to her, immediately calmed her. She finally felt heard. We had had numerous appointments at the local GP surgery and each appointment made her more anxious. No GP we saw understood what the problem was and basically would tell her to go away and come back if the symptoms continued. The initial appointment with Dr Farroq gave my daughter the immediate feeling that her symptoms were real. A MRI was booked and Dr Farooq gave her an ECG. The initial diagnosis was pericarditis. This was explained to my daughter in great detail which also made her feel validated. We are so grateful to Dr Farooq for being so kind, gentle and understanding. His words of belief helped immediately with her anxiety, which I am sure were exaserbating her symptoms.

Dr Farooq listened to what I had to say, encouraged me to talk about how I felt. I never felt rushed. He explained possible reasons for symptoms and organised appropriate tests. Results were later discussed, and how to move forward. I was given opportunities to ask questions and he ensured I was happy with his explanations and care. Very pleased with my care.

It is a pleasure to provide the following review of the experience, assistance and advice that I received from Dr. Farooq during the last 18 months when I was quite seriously ill. At the early part of 2025 I suffered a severe lack of breath and after a discussion with my GP decided to attend at The Spire for a scan. Luckily for me, Dr. Farooq saw and examined the results of that scan and before I got home he telephoned me to state that I should go to the hospital immediately and he would endeavour to obtain a bed. During my stay in hospital Dr. Farooq arranged for a number of tests and scans - such as Echocardiogram and an Ambulatory Monitor - to be undertaken and upon my discharge he arranged for a Life Vest to be supplied and fitted which I wore for some 2 months. In addition upon leaving hospital it was found that I had developed drop foot to my right leg and again Dr. Farooq subsequently arranged for a stroke consultant to investigate. I have since attended a number of follow up appointments with Dr Farooq and receive, a few days after those appointments, a detailed letter from him – a copy of which also goes to my GP – setting out my progress to date and reviewing my medication. My experience with Dr. Farooq has been exemplary and his explanation of my current state of health at those follow up appointments have been particularly thorough - each one was undertaken with the utmost of professional standards - together with a touch of humour !! I regard myself as being very fortunate to have received this standard of care and treatment from Dr. Farooq. May 2...
