Dr Vasim Farooq is a Consultant Cardiologist and Interventional Cardiologist, practicing privately at Spire Cardiff Hospital and within the NHS at the University Hospital of Wales. He specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of cardiovascular conditions, including chest pain, palpitations, breathlessness, dizziness, blackouts, heart murmurs, and cholesterol management.
Dr Farooq has particular expertise in complex coronary artery disease and structural heart interventions. His advanced procedural work includes transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) for aortic valve narrowing and patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure for selected patients who have experienced unexplained strokes. As well as this he has performed over 3,000 coronary angioplasty procedures, most via minimally invasive wrist access, and uses cutting-edge intravascular imaging techniques such as IVUS and OCT to optimise outcomes.
He earned a MB ChB from the University of Manchester in 2000 and obtained Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) in 2004. He was later awarded a PhD from the Erasmus University in Rotterdam, with research focusing on the management of complex coronary artery disease.
Outside of his clinical work, he enjoys exploring the coastline of South West Wales and trekking across the UK with his family.

Review after TAVI,5 months earlier. Very helpful with updated medication & test to ensure positive progress.
Dr Vadim Farooq is very approachable, knowledgeable and straight to the point. Excellent professional
My experience with Dr. Farooq has always been excellent
Dr Farooq was very clear and gave me all the information I need. I appreciated the time he gave me and I didn’t feel rushed. I feel confident I am in good hands under his care and expertise.
I felt at ease and listened to , doctor was polite ,explained clearly what steps were to be taken and how my treatment plan was going to be worked out
Dr Farooq was very thorough and made changes to my meds to help with lack of energy.
A person-centred approach which made me feel listened to and involved in all decisions about my treatment plan. This made me feel empowered to self-manage my health.
From the first appointment Dr Farooq put myself and my daughter at ease. My daughter had experienced chest pains for a few months and her anxiety about the possibility of a heart attack was high. Dr Farooq had a calming manner with Ruby and let her talk through her symptoms of which there were many. When Ruby had finished explaining Dr Farooq was able to get Colin very calmly what he thought this could be. With her permission he gave her an ECG which was normal. This helped Ruby’s anxiety and we could visibly see her calm . Dr Farooq allowed Ruby as much time as she needed in the appointment and helped book her in for a MRI to rule out any further problems with her heart. My daughter told me after the appointment how much Dr Farooq had helped with his explanation of what it possibly could be and that he had made her feel heard after multiple appointments with GP’s not understanding what she was trying to explain. We both found the experience with Dr Farooq to be a very positive and helpful experience and one that led to Ruby’s recovery both with the medication prescribed and the reassurance he gave.
I was seen in OPD at UHW earlier this year and my consultation with Dr Farooq was very satisfactory and positive
Very thorough assessment and explanation of the condition. Detailed consideration of treatment options and reasoning behind the treatment plan. Investigates where necessary and with a clear goal, but not excessively. Very patient focused in giving choices around treatment and follow up/monitoring. Always seems genuinely interested in the condition and the patient, and very enthusiastic.
Dr Farooq is a highly impressive cardiologist. Not only has a high level of diagnostic and interventional skill, his approach to the overall management of patients is impressive. He focuses on overall cardiovascular care, including aggressive prevention of disease. Together we have developed a highly effective NHS service to prevent recurrent heart attacks in patients.
