Dr Vasim Farooq is a Consultant Cardiologist and Interventional Cardiologist in Cardiff, seeing patients privately at Spire Cardiff Hospital and in the NHS at the University Hospital of Wales. He assesses and treats chest pain, angina, suspected coronary artery disease, palpitations, breathlessness, dizziness, blackouts, heart murmurs and cholesterol problems. His practice also includes preventive cardiology, follow-up after heart attack, coronary angiography, also known as a coronary angiogram, angioplasty and stent treatment, aortic stenosis, TAVI, and patent foramen ovale, PFO, closure for selected patients after otherwise unexplained stroke.
Dr Farooq’s practice includes general cardiology, preventive cardiology and advanced interventional cardiology. He has extensive experience in complex coronary artery disease and has performed more than 3,000 coronary angioplasty procedures, most using minimally invasive wrist access. He uses advanced intravascular imaging techniques, including IVUS and OCT, to guide treatment decisions in complex coronary artery disease.
His structural heart work includes transcatheter aortic valve implantation, TAVI, for patients with aortic stenosis or narrowing of the aortic valve. He also performs PFO closure in carefully selected patients following otherwise unexplained stroke.
Preventive cardiology, also known as preventative cardiology, focuses on reducing a patient’s future risk of angina, heart attacks, strokes and heart failure by identifying and treating risk factors early. This includes cholesterol management, blood pressure assessment, family history of heart disease, lifestyle risk factors and cardiovascular risk assessment.
He qualified in medicine from the University of Manchester in 2000 and became a Member of the Royal College of Physicians in 2004. He was later awarded a PhD from Erasmus University Rotterdam, where his research focused on the management of complex coronary artery disease.

He was very helpful, explaining everything to me.he made me relax and feel very comfortable.
Dr Farooq has been treating me since the moment I went into the ICU after suffering a cardiac arrest. He is absolutely wonderful. Always puts me at ease when explaining what happened to me and what will be happening when he performs the PFO closure. I can’t thank him enough for everything that he has done and continues to do.
Throughout my care with Dr Farooq he showed a complete understanding of my needs, going above and beyond to rectify, manage and control my condition. Dr Farooq's calming, compassionate professional nature completely put me at ease and I truly felt listened too. My condition is now well managed and life changing due to his perseverance I cannot praise him enough.
During my replacement stents Dr.Farooq radiated confidence to me and his staff making me very comfortable and found the following meeting to day similarly comfortable thanks again Eugene 😀
Dr Farooq is very kind, understanding and he explains everything very clearly, discusses the reasons of changing or proscribing a new medication according to my needs and medical conditions.
Dr Farooq always takes the time to explain everything. I never feel rushed. He is always friendly but professional. I always feel extremely comfortable with Dr Farooq😊
Dr Farooq was excellent at listening to my symptoms giving me time to explain. I felt that my concerns had been understood . He was extremely thorough and I felt supported and confident in his advice and actions. Throughout the whole assessment and treatment I felt confident in his care, and respected. Being properly listened to was so very important, this was very much appreciated.
I have suffered from a heart condition (shortness of breath and pressure on the chest) for some fifteen years. During that time I was treated for angina, however, following a review and angiogram by Dr Farooq 18 months ago it was identified that there was an issue with the micro vascular veins on one side of the heart. My meds were changed accordingly which greatly improved my condition. I've just had a follow up consultation, during which my meds have been further adjusted. I cannot thank Dr Farooq enough for what he has done for me and how he has taken the time to explain in detail, at a level I can understand, what is happening to my body and how to manage the condition. I feel very re-assured that I am receiving such support.
Seeing Dr Farooq is always a positive experience. The only reservation is the usual wait beyond the appointment time. The support staff are invariably friendly.
Arrived on time. Had ECG, height, weight etc done not long after arrival. Slight delay to see Dr Farooq, but was informed of this by a member of staff and the communication board. Dr Farooq is very reassuring, and listens to you. He offers clear explanations on any decision he makes
Dr Farooq is a highly impressive cardiologist. Not only has a high level of diagnostic and interventional skill, his approach to the overall management of patients is impressive. He focuses on overall cardiovascular care, including aggressive prevention of disease. Together we have developed a highly effective NHS service to prevent recurrent heart attacks in patients.
