I am a highly experienced consultant spinal surgeon based in North West of England, specialising in paediatric and adult spinal surgery. I practise privately at Spire Cheshire Hospital and Spire Liverpool Hospital, providing expert care for patients with spinal stenosis, spinal discectomy, lumbar decompression, spinal deformities including scoliosis and kyphosis, spinal fractures, spinal infections, neck pain and arm pain. My approach focuses on tailored, evidence-based treatments aimed at restoring mobility and improving quality of life.
Since January 2025, I have held NHS consultant appointments at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and The Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust in Liverpool. My current NHS practice involves the treatment of both children and adults with complex spinal conditions, with a particular emphasis on spinal deformities, including scoliosis and other complex reconstructive spinal disorders.
Previously, from 2017, I was a consultant spinal surgeon at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry, where I managed a broad spectrum of adult spinal conditions. These included degenerative spinal disease, spinal deformities, spinal trauma, spinal tumours, and spinal infections. I have performed over 1,000 spinal operations, including complex adult deformity corrections, and I am recognised for my expertise in managing challenging spinal cases. I also provide second opinion and regularly collaborate in dual-consultant surgeries for highly complex procedures.
Beyond my clinical work, I am a committed leader in spinal surgery. I have previously served as Clinical Lead for Spinal Surgery within my NHS trust and I am actively involved in education, service development, and professional leadership. I am a member of leading professional organisations, including the British Association of Spinal Surgeons, the British Scoliosis Society, and the British Indian Orthopaedic Society.

Mr Sujaya Dheerendra is professional, friendly, helpful, and excellent in his interactions with patients. He provides clear explanations of conditions, X-ray results, MRI scans, and treatments for spinal decompression and lumbar decompression surgery. Mr Dheerendra listens, conducts thorough examinations, and offers excellent follow-up care, leaving patients comfortable and confident in his expertise. Most patients seek Mr Dheerendra for spinal pain, degenerative disc disease, and spinal decompression.
Consultation was conducted so professionally, his background is outstanding,I doubt if I could have found a better consultant. I’m I but confused about the referral,I thought that could have been used in The Liverpool University hospital by either a NHS doctor or a private doctor, who we had contact with, now I’ve been informed it wasn’t really a referral, because it wasn’t submitted to the NHS,”ICE” systems, still waiting for the procedure to be carried out,I didn’t expect it to be in 48hours,but I’m still waiting it’s been several days,I’ve been in absolute agony for around four weeks now, pain makes me cry at times.I don’t understand if I had broken my finger and been in pain, that would have been fixed on the day,but suffering like mine can be left indefinitely,I have had very dark thoughts while going through this nightmare,I wonder how much longer I can carry on
Mr Sujaya Dheerendra was exceptionally polite, friendly, and knowledgeable. He took the time to truly listen to my concerns with empathy and understanding. After carefully considering my current circumstances, he proposed a plan that was both accommodating and helpful. He clearly explained the next steps in detail, leaving me feeling reassured and confident about moving forward.
My spinal decompression surgery with Mr Dheerendra went very well. I was only in Spire Liverpool hospital for one night. My consultant surgeon Mr Dheerendra came to visit me after surgery to confirm the procedure had been successful. He also visited me the next morning to discharge me. That is excellent care.
Mr Dheerendra could not have been more professional, appropriately friendly and always explained everything so I could understand what he was going to do .He was exceptionally helpful in securing a hospital place where I would be accepted for the operation I needed. (Other medical conditions had made this a difficulty in the hospital of my first choice.) He was an excellent surgeon, my recovery has been very good, he took extra time to make 3 additional visits when I was in hospital to ensure that the wound was healing properly. He was very good at listening to me, both in terms of my current problems and in terms of my expectations for recovery. I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone, both for his skills as a surgeon and for his ability to communicate with his patient
Despite a 2 1/2 hour journey the visit was well worth it. Mr Dheerendra was excellent at explaining my condition ,showing my Xray results and discussing my future prognosis. Very pleased with my consultation.
Fantastic consultant - very patient, explained everything carefully and listened to me (which was very important for me due to previous issues). Dr Sujaya looked at my shoulder/ neck problems wider, took time to analyse a lot of MRI scans and never rushed with anything - I felt I got all needed attention. I came with neck/ shoulder pain but he also helped me with checking the status of a disc which popped 2 years ago and was treated by his colleague in the past. Great professional and I fully trusted his expertise and grateful for very calm and warm communication (which helps a lot during stressful situations). If any more problems, I will definitely come back to the same consultant.
Prompt appointment. The spinal consultant surgeon was well informed about my condition. He referred to my MRI scan to explain and show me the nature of my pain and the lumber decompression treatment pros and cons.
