About
Mr Karamanakos is a General and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon at the Basildon and Thurrock University Hospital. He sees patients with a wide range of benign upper GI diseases and performs a range of surgeries including gastrectomy, anti-reflux surgery, cholecystectomy (removal of gallbladder), and paraoesophageal hernia repair. He is also the emergency service lead, and he has established a number of clinical pathways as well as a Surgical Ambulatory Unit.
Mr Karamanakos earned his medical degree from Semmelweis University of Medicine, Budapest. He then spent time in the United Kingdom and Greece where he completed his surgical training before completing his CCT in General Surgery from the University Hospital of Patras in Greece in 2009. Following that, he became a consultant surgeon in the University Hospital of Patras, where he focused predominantly on the management of morbidly obese patients with bariatric surgery. He achieved a PhD for his work in bariatric surgery and gastrointestinal hormones, and he has been widely published in prestigious medical journals including 'The Annals of Surgery.'
Mr Karamanakos later undertook advanced laparoscopic surgical training at the world-renowned IRCAD/EITS center in Strasbourg, France and has also completed fellowships in gastrointestinal surgery at London's Whipps Cross Hospital and Kings College Hospital.

I have had several different successful hernia repairs with Mr Karamanakos. I have found his care, kindness, approach and surgery excellent. The Anaesthetist was also excellent. However I am also compelled to compliment his secretary Paula Jackson, who is extremely caring, responsive, efficient and effective.

I pay for private medical care and having someone as professional, caring and above a great fella, carry out the surgery on two hernias that have been needing to be done for almost a year was well and truly a massive relief. He explained my condition and made it clear what I would experience, what would be done and the way he did so very much put me at ease and gave me the confidence in him throughout the whole process. I recently had an operation to repair an Umbilical Hernia. From the very first consultation Mr Karamanakos was very professional, informative and best of all very reassuring.
