Dr Sean Vincent Grattan Esmonde

Dr Sean Vincent Grattan Esmonde is a Consultant Cardiologist specialising in cardiac electrophysiology, heart rhythm disorders, and cardiac device therapy. Dedicated to delivering compassionate, patient-centred cardiovascular care, Dr Esmonde investigates a wide spectrum of general cardiac conditions alongside complex rhythm abnormalities.

Dr Esmonde earned his MBChB with Distinction from the University of Manchester in 2012, where he also completed his initial medical training, before undertaking higher specialist training in Cardiology in Northern Ireland. He subsequently completed a sub-specialty fellowship in electrophysiology and cardio-genetics in Dublin, gaining extensive clinical expertise in arrhythmia management and family heart screening. Dr Esmonde is a Member of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) and holds active memberships in the British Heart Rhythm Society, where he serves as a regional representative, as well as the European Society of Cardiology.

In his clinical practice, Dr Esmonde evaluates patients presenting with a broad range of cardiovascular symptoms, including palpitations, blackouts, irregular heartbeats, and breathlessness. His sub-specialist focus encompasses the diagnosis and management of conditions such as atrial fibrillation, supraventricular and ventricular tachycardia, cardiomyopathy, and channelopathies. He performs diagnostic electrophysiology studies and complex therapeutic procedures, including catheter ablation, pulmonary vein isolation, and external cardioversion, alongside the implantation and management of pacemakers, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators, and cardiac resynchronisation therapy devices.

Dr Esmonde contributes to clinical research and academic work in cardiac electrophysiology and rhythm management. His published work includes research on atrioventricular nodal ablation and pacing strategies for patients with difficult-to-control atrial fibrillation. He has also contributed to research in cardiac genetics and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and has participated in European cardiology academic activities relating to rhythm disorders.

He maintains a clinical approach focused on empathy, clear communication, and shared decision-making, ensuring patients feel fully informed and supported throughout their diagnosis and treatment.
