About Dr Rajiv Shah

Dr Rajiv Shah is a Consultant Psychiatrist specialising in General Adult Psychiatry and Medical Psychotherapy, an expertise held by fewer than 1% of UK psychiatrists. He also offers assessment for adolescents with specific difficulties with OCD and its related disorders.

He currently works at the Priory Hospital North London as a specialist in OCD, anxiety disorders, and personality difficulties. He is one of only two psychiatrists in the UK offering specialist private inpatient treatment for OCD, BDD, and complex anxiety disorders, combining medication optimisation with CBT and schema therapy. His extensive experience of working and being supervised by leading figures in this field, in both the NHS and private settings and will join the NHS. He leads a team that offers Tier 4-6 Specialist OCD/BDD Services at national level.

Dr Shah is also an NHS Insomnia specialist and providing tailored sleep assessments and evidence-based treatment for insomnia, nightmare disorder, and sleep paralysis for NHS patients across the UK, as it is the only service of its kind.

In addition, he is an ADHD specialist, offering comprehensive assessments that explore overlapping and transdiagnostic difficulties. While able to recommend medication, his strength lies in psychotherapy informed care supporting behavioural change, identifying barriers, and helping patients access resources and reasonable adjustments.

 I Want Great Care https://www.iwantgreatcare.org/doctors/dr-rajiv-shah-3

He has extensive experience in OCD and its related disorders, having worked in the National inpatient Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) Service at St George’s Mental Health Trust and leaders in CBT and OCD in the NHS and private practice.

He is interested in the field of lifestyle psychiatry and advocates for balancing the transformative potential of optimising sleep, exercise and diet with the nourishing activities of mindfulness, nature connectedness and social connectedness. Using Socratic enquiry with his patients, he aims to promote critical thinking and encourages self-awareness of unhelpful coping strategies and empower them with the knowledge and skills to promote their mental health and wellbeing.

He has integrated his experience of working within these different therapeutic models and combined these holistic tools and techniques into a novel approach that conceptualises the journey to self-discovery for both patients and colleagues as seeking WARMTH; Wisdom (self-knowledge) , Acceptance (self-acceptance) , Resilience (self-empowerment) , Magnanimity (self-forgiveness) , Transformation (self- development) and valuing Hermeneutics (self-reflection).

Through his website www.drrajivshah.co.uk , he promotes positive messages of hope, with videos and adapted CBT resources that encourage critical self-reflection through the development of the School of Warmth.

Average at best . Seemed like a nice gentleman at first but think the swearing during practice is very unprofessional. Now he wasn't swearing at me but using such profanity was very distasteful and shocking . I'm not sure as to why he felt it was ok to swear during my appointment or why he felt comfortable but this isn't something I'm used to . As far as good giving stars i have given average to be nice .

I joined a webinar but was not told in advance what my 'appointment'entailed so I did not know it was a webinar nor how long roughly it would last. Then having joined on my phone slides were shared with qr codes that I could not scan so have no access to the links My overall experience was that this may have been useful if I was told in advance what to expect, I could have joined in a laptop. So I have left feeling slightly frustrated by the whole experience.

My recent visit was a very positive experience. Dr. Shah always takes the time to talk me through my options and makes sure I understand everything, rather than ever making me feel rushed into a decision. I tend to have lots of questions, and he is always incredibly patient with me and takes them seriously, answering everything thoughtfully and thoroughly.

I found this course to be very useful. Dr Shah was engaging and professional and his explanations were clear. Having spent many years being told by my well meaning partner 'oh I think you slept more then you know' just having my insomnia validated was enormously helpful in itself and being able to name it in group was equally important to me. The course gave me an understanding that it is ok to allow myself to be realistic about my individual sleep patterns and the knowledge that I am attaining my core sleep was wonderfully reassuring. I will practice the techniques I have learnt on the course and I have already seen an improvement in my sleep. I am extremely thankful for the opportunity to attend this course with Dr Shah.
