Dr Rahul Mukherjee is a Consultant Cardiologist and heart rhythm specialist based in London and East Sussex. He has expertise in all aspects of general cardiology including the diagnosis and treatment of chest pain, palpitations, blackouts, dizziness and breathlessness. He also sees patients who have high blood pressure or high cholesterol and can provide guidance on lowering the risks of developing cardiovascular disease.
He has specialist experience in the treatment of heart rhythm problems, including atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, supraventricular tachycardia and ventricular arrhythmias.
Dr Mukherjee provides expert care in both cardiac electrophysiology (the study and treatment of heart rhythm disorders) and cardiac device therapy. He regularly performs complex procedures such as catheter ablations for atrial and ventricular arrhythmias and implantations of pacemakers and defibrillators (ICDs). He also has specialist expertise in advanced pacing techniques, including left bundle branch area pacing (LBBAP).
With a background in cardiac MRI, Dr Mukherjee integrates the latest imaging and mapping technologies to deliver precise, personalised care. His approach focuses on combining technical excellence with a clear, compassionate understanding of each patient's needs.
Dr Mukherjee completed his medical degree with Merit (graduating in the top 20% of his year) from University College London, followed by a PhD at King's College London, where he conducted pioneering research into the use of cardiac MRI in guiding catheter ablation for complex arrhythmias. He undertook advanced sub-speciality training in the leading tertiary hospitals in London including Guy's and St Thomas', King's College, and St George's Hospitals. He completed a dedicated fellowship in catheter ablation of ventricular tachycardia as part of the AVATAR program at St George's Hospital.
Alongside his clinical work, Dr Mukherjee is passionate about medical education and research. He was an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at King's College London and is an Advanced Life Support Instructor with the Resuscitation Council UK. His research has been published widely in peer-reviewed journals (> 40 publications), and he has received several national and international awards for his academic work. He has generated circa £400k in research grant income and served as a Principle Investigator and Chief Investigator for a number of research trials.
He is a member of the Society of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance, the European Heart Rhythm Association, and the Royal College of Physicians.
