Dr Peter McKavanagh

Dr Peter McKavanagh is a Consultant Cardiologist with many years of experience in the treatment and management of general cardiac conditions, coronary artery disease, interventional cardiology and heart failure. He sees private patients at Dundonald Consultant Rooms.

Dr McKavanagh earned his primary medical qualification (MB BCh) at Queen's University Belfast in 2003, and later went on to further his education, achieving his Master's degree in Clinical Education and his PhD in Cardiac CT in 2016. During this time, he undertook his basic and advanced training, and gained his membership with the Royal College of Physicians by passing his exams. Upon completion of his exams, Dr McKavanagh undertook a Cardiology fellowship in Toronto, under the University of Toronto. He also gained a keen interest in improving cardiology practice in Africa, and spent 6 months volunteering in Kenya and Nigeria, with the Save a Heart Cardiac Surgery Mission.

Upon completion of his volunteering, Dr McKavanagh returned to Ireland and was appointed Consultant at the Ulster Hospital, where he manages patients with cardiac conditions. He is also a keen researcher, authoring several peer-reviewed research papers in renowned clinical journals and presenting his research at national and international conferences. He has also been the recipient of the European Society of Cardiology Young Investigator, in 2013.
