About Dr Neil Sharma

Professor Neil Sharma is a Consultant Head and Neck, Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgeon at the Priory Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham. Graduating from the University of Birmingham in 2002, he went on to complete higher surgical training in Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery in 2017. His PhD, awarded in 2014, investigated the role of a novel proto-oncogene in thyroid cancer, and was followed by post-doctoral research alongside clinical training.

From 2016 to 2017, he served as President of the Association of Otolaryngologists in Training, before undertaking advanced fellowship training in Auckland, New Zealand, under internationally recognised surgeons Mr Nick McIvor and Mr John Chaplin. Returning to Birmingham in 2018, he took up his current consultant post at University Hospital Birmingham, leading the thyroid cancer service.

Professor Sharma’s expertise spans benign and malignant thyroid disease, complex and revision thyroid surgery, parathyroid surgery, retrosternal goitre, salivary gland surgery, and advanced head and neck cancer surgery. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and the European Board of Surgery (Endocrine Surgery Section), and sits on the Executive Committee of the British Association of Endocrine and Thyroid Surgeons. An active researcher and lecturer, he focuses on clinical, translational, and global surgery initiatives to improve cancer outcomes.
