Mr. Shaun O'Brien is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in soft tissue knee reconstruction, knee arthroplasty, foot surgery, and trauma surgery. He qualified with honours from Newcastle Medical School in 1990 and has pursued a career in orthopaedic surgery ever since.
After completing his specialist registrar training in the northern region, Mr. O'Brien developed a particular interest in knee and trauma surgery, particularly soft tissue injuries around the knee. To further this interest, he undertook a fellowship in knee and sports medicine at the Brisbane Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Centre in Australia. During his time in Brisbane, he gained experience in advanced techniques for arthroscopic knee surgery, including ligament reconstruction, meniscal repair, and articular surface defect resurfacing. Mr. O'Brien also had the opportunity to work with elite athletes, providing care as part of the orthopaedic team for the Queensland Reds (rugby union), Brisbane Broncos (rugby league), and the Brisbane Bullets (basketball).
While in Brisbane, he collaborated with the physiotherapy department at the University of Queensland, undertaking research projects on ACL reconstruction, rehabilitation, and shoulder stabilisation. He later completed a fellowship in trauma surgery at the prestigious Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, working under trauma surgeon David Helfet.
Mr. O'Brien currently holds a consultant position at Sunderland Royal Hospital, where he focuses on knee replacement, knee arthroscopy, anterior ligament reconstruction, and sports medicine. With over 20 years of experience Mr O'Brien has now performed over 5,000 toatl knee replacements, 1000 partial knee replacements and 1,500 ACL reconstructions as well as having a large revision knee replacement practice.

Mr. O'Brien had been recommend to me by another medical professional whose judgement I trusted. As a nervous patient I met with Mr. O'Brien, who instantly put me at ease. Mr. O'Brien listened to the issues I was having with both of my knees and gave me a full and thorough examination. We discussed best options and he sympathetically explained the procedure to me, in terms a non-medical person could easily understand. On the day of my first full knee replacement I wanted to "run away" but again he alleviated my fears. The operation proved to be a success. Mr. O'Brien visited me later in the day, post my operation, which I found a very kind thing to do. My follow up appointment, six weeks later was also very re-assuring. Following my recent second full knee replacement, this amazing treatment was replicated. The entire group of professionals involved in my treatment were all tremendous, they worked as a team offering excellent care whilst I was being treated by Mr. O'Brien's. I cannot personally thank him enough and would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending him to anyone in the future. THANKS
warm friendly and very relaxed approach made me feel at ease, no worries; all details calmly and fully explained. I was at ease at all times due to his confident assuredness in his work. And always a smile and time for a short chat too...
Mr O’Brien (and his PA Claire) were very flexible and expeditious in sorting scans and acute pain relief - excellent service and personality!
Can’t fault Mr O’Brien but care received at Spire wasn’t satisfactory. Given repeated doses of oral morphine when it clearly was having an adverse effect & being bundled to hospital on a bank holiday was not the experience I was hoping for. Above said I am now recovering well three months post operation.
Mr O’Brien was was very professional and compassionate. He is extremely knowledgeable I felt safe and reassured
I was being accessed for a future operation an extremely good meeting
Listened to what I had to say about my injury and fully explained what the next options would be to determine the exact cause of the pain.
He was very clear about the process and reassuring. As a person he inspires well placed confidence . An excellent result from the surgery
