The first consultation with Mr Casula was open and interactive, I had a lot of questions concerning the surgery and outcomes which he answered in a very straightforward way so that I had the confidence to proceed. The surgery was very neat and Mr Casula used the minimum necessary intervention which has aided my healing recovery. Throughout the post surgery phase in hospital and at discharge Mr Casula has been very thorough, professional and open with the facts around my progress.

On first meeting with Mr Casula he explained what the problem was with my Mitral Valve and the options of either repair or replacement. He told me to research the two types of replacement before I make a decision if replacement was the roots we had to go down dependant on how bad the Mitral valve was. I did this and had a follow up to discuss my decision and I was satisfied I had made the right one. On the day of the op I spoke with Mr Casula and confirmed my choice. He put me at ease and luckily was able to repair the existing valve. He talked to me the day after and explained that he was very happy with the results and it had been a challenging repair. He and his team monitored my progress for the rest of my stay in hospital. When release after 5 days they were available and kept in contact. Overal so far a good experience after two weeks since the Op.

I was referred to Mr Casula by Dr Khamis and from the first moment I met him I knew I was in the hands of a person who was clearly very confident and assured of the procedure I was going to undergo (quadruple bypass) and I could tell he wanted to reassure and explain in detail so that I understood all that was going to happen. Mr Casula's bedside manner was very calming and soothing and I instantly felt a lot of my anxieties being lifted away. I agreed to proceed with the operation and from start to finish (there is a bit in the middle I don't recall!) I was treated with the greatest of professional care by his whole team of nurses and support staff at The Wellington Hospital. I met Mr Casula after the operation and he reassured me that it had gone really well and he was very happy with the outcome. I genuinely felt a very personal connection with Mr Casula and saw him as my professional best friend rather than just my surgeon. We talked about personal matters and non medical stuff for a while which was really nice. I was discharged on the sixth day after admission and I am awaiting my follow up consultation with Mr Casula in a few days time but I am up and walking 30 minutes per day and feeling very positive about matters, all thanks to Mr Caula's interventions. I will be eternally grateful to Mr Casula for his intervention and professional handling of my bypass as I feel he has given me the greatest opportunity possible for me to continue to enjoy a fulfilling life ahead.

I have never been in hospital , never had surgery .I had a angiogram with a view to inserting a balloon in a partially blocked artery with Dr Sen .The previous wk my brother had died suddenly of a severe heart attack . As you can imagine I was feeling very vulnerable. I was sent back to my room where I met Dr Casula who informed in a very confident ,clear and reassuring way that my arteries were severely damaged and that I needed at least a treble heart by pass he said I needed this asap and that he would create a opening in his schedule . Dr Casula was sensitive to me was extraordinarily clear, precise , confident in his explanation of my predicament considering I was in shock his confidence and demeanour made me feel completely at ease and I honestly felt I could trust this man I’ve just met with my life. He understood how I was feeling but made me realise this had to happen and that everything was going to be ok . Post op Dr Casula has been incredible and although I have only seen him a couple of times he’s been at the other end of the phone no matter what time day or night . I feel blessed to have met the remarkable Dr Casula and I honestly couldn’t expect anyone better to have taken me through this very tough time . I have minimal scarring and I am healing well . I will forever be grateful to Dr Casula .

Explanation

My experience under Roberto Casula. I am a 56 year old male. It is relevant that my father died aged 53 after two heart attacks. I found out after an angiogram (carried out privately) that I had to have a heart bypass operation. The cardiologist who performed the angiogram was very aware that I am quite squeamish and do not like to know medical treatment - I just wanted it done. After the angiogram, the cardiologist told me that numerous doctors have assessed the scan and that there is no doubt but I needed a heart bypass. Mr Casula then came in, introduced himself as a senior cardiologist from Imperial College, explained to me in a very matter of fact way that if I did not have the heart bypass, I would not live to average life expectancy. He informed me that he would carry out the operation and that I could look him up on the internet. He told me he used a technique known as off-pump. I really did not want to know any more. I was informed by Mr Casula that the risk of something going badly wrong for someone such as myself was one percent. The operation was set for two weeks hence. The next two weeks were - from a mental point of view - absolutely awful for me. I could not sleep and all I could do was focus on the one percent, not the ninety nine percent. I was convinced I would not survive the operation. I spent quite some time in those two weeks making plans for others post my demise. I was aware that this focus was irrational, but that did not stop me. In my case, emotion trumped rationality. My mindset did not change for the full two weeks. In fact, the morning of the operation I felt like a little boy who wants to run away. The reason I didn’t was because I accepted the medical view that I would die if I didn’t have it. The stress of that knowledge would have ruined whatever shortish time I had left on earth. Another thing was that I did not look up Mr Casula on the internet. I accepted that he was a top doctor but what I did not want to find out was something like “Mr Casula is the second best cardiologist in the country.” This would still make him excellent, but who would want second best when their own life is at risk? Aware of my fears, on the morning of the operation, Mr Casula informed that had I looked him up on the internet, I could have seen what his previous patients have said. I retorted, I think fairly, that this would be a biased sample, as the only patients that could write are those who survived. Those who did not survive are not in a position to write. Mr Casula made a couple of points - which I accepted are also valid - the first that he had not lost anyone in ten years. I asked him not to change his record for me (which fortunately he didn’t). The second point was that the risk of something going badly wrong of one percent is based on a statistic that does not take into consideration the experience and expertise of the doctor performing the operation. He implied, and I accepted, that he is a top doctor. As such, the risk should be lower. Mr Casula made a further point which had a deeper impact on me. He informed me he had operated on his own father-in-law. ( I stand to be corrected on the exact relation but it was a relatively close relation). This made me realise he had confidence in his own ability compared to others. The way I took it (rightly or wrongly) was that if Mr Casula felt a different doctor was better than him, he would have had the different doctor carry out the operation. The fact he did it himself, given he likely knows the reputation and skill set of others, gave me stronger confidence in his ability. Ultimately I faced the operation and due to the anaesthetic I had no idea what happened to me. It was only after the operation that I found out that I had had a quadruple heart bypass. The operation was a success. Post the operation I had no issues or negative views regarding either Mr Casula or any of the wider team who looked after me. Everyone was professional and the care was excellent. I was very surprised how quickly I recovered and the fact I did not experience what can be described as severe pain. I was discharged from hospital after six days (one day sooner than expected). As I write, the operation was eight days ago. I’m currently recovering and getting stronger every day. I have still not looked up Mr Casula on the internet and I have no idea how he ranks versus other senior cardiologists. (Having said that, my sister did look him up and she also told me that he was a top doctor for such an operation). What I can say is that if I someone I knew needed such an operation and asked for my opinion, with the standard caveat that I’m far from a medical professional, I would suggest that they see Mr Casula. From a personal point of view, he saved my life and as such I view him as excellent.

I had minimally invasive bipass surgery under Mr Casula at the wellington hospital. I was originally advised to have the traditional bypass but I am really grateful to Mr Casula for offering the option of the minimally invasive surgery. The pros and cons of both procedures were well explained . The procedure went ahead without complications and I received excellent post operative care in both the ITU and ward at the Wellington Hospital . His cardiac nurse Usha has also been very supportive .
