About Mr Robert Lovell

Mr Robert Lovell is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon specialising in spinal surgery, with extensive experience across the full spectrum of spinal conditions. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and undertook the AO Spinal Fellowship in Brisbane, Australia.

Appointed as a consultant spinal surgeon in 2010, Mr Lovell’s practice encompasses spinal trauma, deformity, infection, malignancy and degenerative conditions, including back pain and sciatica. His particular sub-specialist interest lies in cervical spine surgery, and he has significant expertise in cervical disc replacement. He also has a strong interest in the non-operative management of back pain, ensuring patients receive balanced, evidence-based care.

Mr Lovell has established a leading practice in spinal surgery performed under regional anaesthesia, using techniques similar to those employed in caesarean sections. This is to reduce post-operative pain and enhance recovery which attracts patients from across the UK.

In addition to clinical work, he undertakes spinal medico-legal and clinical negligence cases and practices at Nuffield Health Ipswich Hospital, The Ipswich Hospital, and with Gilmour Piper. He is actively involved in surgical education, lecturing nationally and internationally. Outside medicine, he is a keen musician and enjoys family life with his wife and two daughters.

The surgery and consultation rooms were spotlessly clean. The receptionist was very helpful. What I really appreciated was My Lovells honest approach. He told me that as my spine is so curved and damaged there is nothing he could do and suggested ways to manage the pain.

I saw Mr Lovell for a 2nd opinion. Thank goodness I did. He explained clearly my condition and treatment (physio) required. He also advised that I definitely do not require major (possibly life changing) surgery as advised by the first consultant I had seen. Would definitely recommend.

I requested a review of my Neck MRI, with Mr Lovell due to previous concerns of surgery undergone in 2010, Mr Lovell explained precisely what we were looking at on the MRI, and put my mind completely at rest that my shoulder pain must be something to do with my shoulder in isolation and nothing to do with the nerve paths from my neck, as everything seen was satisfactory.

He was v thorough and quite friendly I’ve never been a private patient before and wasn’t sure what to expect . He needs to change his photo as he now has a beard which I wasn’t expecting! Hopefully I did see Mr Lovell as he looks nothing like this photo !
