Mr Nicholas Cooke is a highly experienced Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Hip and Knee Surgeon, with a career spanning over two decades. He graduated from Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School in 1995 and is a proud member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. With 30 years as a medical doctor and almost 20 years as a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon in the North East of England, Mr Cooke's NHS work is primarily based at North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Trust.
Specialising in primary hip and knee replacements as well as complex revisions, Mr Cooke is renowned for his expertise in metal-on-metal hip revisions, having performed numerous such procedures and contributed valuable research to this field. His clinical practice is comprehensive, also encompassing knee arthroscopies for meniscal tears and osteochondral defects, in addition to offering joint injections for pain relief to hips and knees—often administered during the initial consultation in a clinic setting.
Mr Cooke has conducted extensive research in Birmingham hip resurfacing, focusing on measuring bone density around prostheses; his findings have been presented at both regional and national levels and published in leading orthopaedic journals. He also gained media exposure by appearing on the Channel 4 documentary "Dispatches," which reported on metal-on-metal (ASR) outcomes.
Passionate about education, Mr Cooke is dedicated to mentoring the next generation of healthcare professionals. In collaboration with NHS England, he live streams his hip and knee replacement surgeries using advanced Realwear camera equipment, engaging with over 50 students at a time from various specialties in real time. This innovative teaching method not only enriches the learning experience but also bridges the gap between clinical practice and academic education, making his contribution to orthopaedic training both meaningful and impactful.

I attended my 6 week review with Mr. Cooke following Right knee replacement. Discussed my recovery, checked my scar and knee range of motion. Mr. Cooke assured me that all was well and asked if I wanted to go ahead with Left knee replacement. X-Ray as previously seen, showed similar deterioration to left side. This will be discussed at appt in 3 months. I stated that I was very pleased with outcome to date.
Mr Cooke was straight to the point, gave me chance to ask questions and made me feel at ease.
In Nuffield hospital for knee replacement, all went perfect Mr Cook and his staff were excellent in care and explaining what would be happening before and after ther operation.

Thoroughly nice man. Listens to you and gives a clear plan of treatment
The appointment was a 6 week follow up after replacement knee surgery. Mr Cooke was pleased with my recovery, but concerned that swelling in the the lower leg had not gone down and there was a risk of DVT. He arranged for me to have an ultrasound scan to investigate the problem. Other than that I must say that I am very pleased with the outcome of the operation and my recovery
I was pleasantly surprised, what a lovely spotlessly clean and well run hospital. I was treated with respect and I was seen right on time. I was put at ease by Mr Cooke and he fully explained the problem and the procedure I will be having. A first class experience.
