Matt Dawson is a leading knee surgeon based in the North of England specialising in sports injuries and degenerative conditions affecting the knee. Matt is a leading authority on osteotomy surgery in the UK, Europe and around the globe.
Having completed his orthopaedic training in London and a sports knee fellowship in Dublin, Matt served as a specialist knee and trauma surgeon at North Cumbria University Hospital for 22 years before moving into a full time private knee specialist role. During this time Matt established a knee fellowship which attracted senior trainees from around the UK and hosted short term fellowships for surgeons attending from around Europe. Matt works at Newcastle Nuffield and Circle Lancaster hospitals.
Matt performs a wide range of knee procedures including arthroscopy, femoral and tibial osteotomy, total and partial knee replacement, articular cartilage surgery, single and multiple ligament reconstruction, patella realignment and stabilisation and a range of combined complex
procedures for deformity and instability. Matt has developed probably the largest single surgeon UK practice in simple and complex osteotomy with over 1000 cases performed to date but also offers a high volume practice of knee replacement with over 2000 total knee and unicompartmental knee replacements to date. He also includes personalised knee replacement surgery (Conformis implant) in his repertoire as science safely endorses the value of such new technology. This underpins a breadth of competency to safely provide an evidence-based approach to individual patient assessment and treatment.
Matt believes in the principle of joint preservation in order to prolong knee activity and function to the highest level for as long as possible. His philosophy is to individually assess patients with the appreciation that alignment and stability of the knee are the bedrock to successful knee function and effective surgery. Wherever a major intervention may be required Matt believes in patient choice and the possibility of a patient retaining their own knee joint where it may be possible, reasonable and appropriate on the basis of evidence. Matt uses Patient Specifc Instrumentation (PSI) where indicated for both osteotomy and knee replacement surgery. Matt has educated the current generation of UK and international osteotomy and knee surgeons having been at the vanguard of the revolution in osteotomy practice in Europe over the past 2 decades. His involvement in teaching at his own course and internationally as an invited speaker has contributed to the education of 1000s of current and aspiring surgeons
Matt has comprehensive experience in ligament reconstruction surgery and has performed in excess of 1000 ACL reconstruction procedures utilising a range of graft materials according to indication. Matt therefore utilises hamstring, patella tendon-bone, quadriceps and occasionally allograft tissue for primary and revision procedures. Sometimes the procedures are combined with reinforcement procedures to improve the chances of long term success and osteotomy where realignment may be required.
Matt is committed to the education of healthcare professionals. In addition to the established knee fellowship, in June 2015 Matt launched the Northern Osteotomy Masterclass and runs this acclaimed course which attracts experts from around the globe and provides high-quality training for consultants and the surgeons of tomorrow. Matt is a founder member of UK Knee Osteotomy Registry (UKKOR), the world’s first national osteotomy registry whose database is dedicated to knee realignment (osteotomy) surgery.
Matt is in demand to lecture locally, nationally and internationally on a frequent basis. Matt regularly
publishes in peer-reviewed journals on the subject of osteotomy. Matt has recently completed a landmark international consensus study in the journal of Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy (KSSTA) (May 2024) which is the official clinical journal of European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy (ESSKA). This significant study will provide a
reference framework for future osteotomy surgeons worldwide and was possible because Matt was the chair of the ESSKA osteotomy committee from 2019 to 2022 which facilitated the launch of this major project. Matt continues to serve as committee member in the ESSKA organisation.
Outside of work Matt has been married to his wife Jo for over 28 years and together they have four children. He is a long-suffering lifelong Newcastle United fan. Matt enjoys family life, cycling, all sports and walking Walter the dog and Eddie his hyperactive spaniel!

Mr Matthew Dawson's interactions are professional and caring. He provides clear explanations of knee problems and discusses all management options, which helps patients make informed decisions. Patients commend his skilled surgical approach, leading to successful recoveries and improved mobility through various knee procedures including replacements. Patient feedback highlights remarkable improvements in quality of life and relief following knee treatments.
Comprehensive consultation, everything was explained and a clear plan discussed to sort the knee issues out.
Listened patiently and sympathetically. Undertook a careful and thorough examination. Clearly explained the findings of the x-ray and MRI scan. Discussed the management options and involved me in the decision-making. I left the consultation feeling confident with the plans for my further management.
In a telephone conversation with Mr Dawson he explained clearly what my knee problem was. He listened to my concerns and discussed my possible options. I was given the time to think about my options without feelIng pressurised to make any quick decisions. I would be very happy to recommend Mr Dawson .
I was a little apprehensive prior to my consultation with Matt Dawson and assumed he would just give me options for different operations for my knee which has no cartilage at all on one side, so ‘bone on bone’, but he listened to what I wished for, examined me thoroughly and gave me all the information on the options I had to consider. From my x rays my knee needed some sort of replacement but he understood and respected my reasons for not wanting to do so until absolutely necessary. Primarily as a dance teacher I wanted to be able to dance as near to 100% as my knee would let me, be on my feet for long shifts working behind a bar and walk my dog every day, without too much pain and without risk of further damage to the knee. Big ask, but he came up with an option/answer. I went ahead with the knee brace he recommended and it has changed my life and given me all that I asked for, pain free and hopefully for some years to come. I am amazed and over the moon at the difference it has made to my life. I thank him so much for looking outside the box and not just recommending a knee operation. I would, without hesitation, recommend Matt Dawson to anyone considering a knee operation.
Mr Dawson gave me a very detailed explanation of what would happen in my operation and made me feel very confident going into the procedure. After he came to see me and explained what he had done. My scars are so neat I’m very happy with my recovery and the surgery outcome. I would recommend Mr Dawson to anyone looking for knee surgery.
From the initial appointment to the completion of surgery and after care, I was extremely impressed with Matt's professionalism and expertise. He explained everything very clearly and patiently, and was understanding of my age (77). The exercises after the operation were painful but very important and a necessity to a complete and full recovery. My knee is now fully healed and scaring is not noticeable. I am now able to walk 5 miles including the first 500 foot climb of the Coast to Coast walk (Dent Fell) and this is only 16 weeks post op. My aim is to be doing a lot more walking and cycling in the forthcoming months. I would fully recommend Matt Dawson to anyone considering a complete knee replacement. My thanks go to Matt and all his team.
As a patient in a lot of pain, it was actually a relief to be told “bad news” when that news was that there is a very real physical explanation for the years of knee pain and the inability to walk, especially when qualified with the very comforting statement that “the good news” is that the problem can be fixed. With two knees now “fixed” simultaneously, thanks to Matt Dawson, my only regret is that I did not consult him earlier. From the very first consultation throughout the whole process, I felt I was being treated by someone very knowledgeable but also very caring. I was amazed at how quickly he completed the procedures but also how much time he was prepared to spend explaining and reassuring. I have already recommended Matt Dawson to others and will continue to do so.
From first meeting till the end of my treatment everything was superb, everything thing was explained thoroughly and professionally, the operation, aftercare and results expected were explained fully, the final results were life changing for me and cannot thank Mr Dawson enough, thanks again.
Mr Dawson is a very talented Orthopaedic Surgeon and his friendly manner made a potentially daunting experience quite enjoyable. His excellent care and attention to detail was second to none. I am very pleased with the results of my surgery as it has given me a new lease of life and I am extremely grateful.
I am delighted to be able to confirm that my full left knee replacement carried out by Mr. Mathew Dawson in December 2019 has been a complete success in every way. Following a most informative and helpful initial consultation, my operation proceeded in a timely manner to an early recovery, enabling me to return to a busy outdoor life such as I have been unable to follow for many years.
Very skilled knee osteotomy surgeon with good bedside manner to boot
