Mr Gorav Datta is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon practising in Hampshire and London, with specialist expertise in knee and hip surgery across both joint-preserving and joint replacement procedures. His practice encompasses the full spectrum of hip and knee care, including arthroscopy, ligament reconstruction, joint replacement, and complex revision surgery.
Mr Datta graduated in medicine from University College London and completed a Doctorate of Medicine (MD) research degree at Imperial College London. He has a strong academic background and remains actively involved in research, with numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals. He has led and contributed to multiple NHS clinical trials and currently serves as Trauma Research Lead at University Hospital Southampton (UHS). Alongside his research commitments, he is heavily involved in teaching, supervising undergraduate medical students and training surgical trainees.
Mr Datta has a specialist interest in soft tissue and joint-preserving surgery of the hip and knee, including hip arthroscopy, femoral head re-sculpting, and advanced arthroscopic techniques for ligament and cartilage injuries. He regularly treats conditions such as ACL injuries, labral tears, hip impingement, hip dysplasia, hip and groin pain, knee instability, and sports-related injuries. He also manages osteoarthritis of the hip and knee, with particular expertise in treating younger patients where joint preservation is a priority.
In addition to conventional surgical approaches, Mr Datta is passionate about innovation in orthopaedics and offers biological and regenerative treatments, including growth factor and PRP injections, for chronic tendinopathies and osteoarthritis. His research interests focus on the use of biological therapies to preserve patients’ native joints and delay or avoid the need for joint replacement where possible.
Mr Datta holds several senior specialist roles at University Hospital Southampton. He is the regional lead for pelvic and acetabular reconstruction, providing a tertiary referral service for complex pelvic and acetabular injuries across Hampshire, Dorset, and Wiltshire. This work frequently involves highly complex hip reconstruction and replacement surgery. He is also the Sarcoma Lead at UHS, assessing patients with suspected primary bone and soft tissue malignancies and managing patients with secondary bone cancers.

My Consultancy Visit was as anticipated, efficient and professional'
The care, advice and professionalism received by Mr Datta was outstanding. He examined my injury thoroughly, and I feel that finally someone has taken the time to investigate further. Thank you, it is very much appreciated.
Very clear and concise advice, felt listened to and considered and a sense of trust in the outcomes discussed
I was welcomed at The Spire hospital reception on a bright sunny day and guided to an airy room with a calming view of trees. This is important to my wellbeing. I flowed through each department as needed for my total hip replacement with a seemless effort , a visit from Mr Datta, my surgeon, who was calm and clear about my surgery. Also his following morning post surgery visit. And then Dr. Sacco Anaesthetist to discus route to be taken and his amazing team. After surgery, the recovery nurse/team was totally diligent ,I I felt reassured during my state of spinal anaesthesia and recovery. Thank you to CJ RGN and the other staff in the ward team. During my stay I felt safe and cared for.
A very speedy res to my X-ray visit at local hospital. Mr Datta was most professional in his diagnosis.

Thank you for your review - I am glad that we were able to offer a quick resolution
As one would hope. Friendly but efficient. Prepared to listen and answer queries.
Mr Datta welcomed me into his room, was encouraging regarding my post-op walking ability....apparently very good compared to others at the same stage. He reassured me regarding the tiredness I am currently experiencing - explaining that it was understandable due to loss of blood during operation. (It would have been useful to know that at the time of the initial op recovery.) He didn't ask about the wound recovery - perhaps he'd seen the 'good' report from nurses who removed the clips?
I was very apprehensive when I first arrived, but the help and kindness from everybody made me relax somewhat. The Nurses were exceptionally helpful, with kind explanations of what was going to happen. This helped a lot to relax me. The anaesthetist and his staff explained what they were doing, and I did not remember much after that. I did not feel any pain throughout the whole procedure. The Physiotherapist was most kind and understanding. Mr Datta visited me before and after the procedure, asking if I had any questions, I did not. All in all, the help and kindness, helped me through it all. Thank you all.
Mr Datta listened to what I had to say and explained the procedure Fully
