Dr Ernest Wong

Dr Ernest Wong is a Consultant Rheumatologist with extensive experience in diagnosing and treating a wide range of rheumatological conditions. He has been a Consultant Rheumatologist at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust since 2009, having completed specialist rheumatology training in Norwich, Bath and Oxford.

He has particular expertise in inflammatory arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis, as well as polymyalgia rheumatica, giant cell arteritis, vasculitis, gout, lupus and other connective tissue diseases.

Dr Wong has a specialist interest in rheumatology ultrasound and uses ultrasound as part of his clinical practice where appropriate to improve diagnostic accuracy and guide treatment. He co-founded the South Central Rheumatology Ultrasound Network and has taught rheumatology ultrasound regionally and nationally. He has also contributed to ultrasound education through the British Society for Rheumatology.

Alongside his clinical practice, Dr Wong has a longstanding interest in clinical research and improving patients’ access to new treatments. As Rheumatology Research Lead at Portsmouth, he has been UK Chief Investigator and Principal Investigator for numerous clinical trials across inflammatory rheumatic diseases.

He is also committed to medical education and has trained and supervised rheumatology doctors both in the UK and internationally.

Dr Wong believes strongly in a patient-centred approach to rheumatology. He takes time to understand how symptoms affect each individual and aims to provide patients with a clear explanation of their diagnosis, appropriate investigations and a practical, personalised treatment plan. Where the diagnosis is uncertain, his aim is to help patients understand the possible causes of their symptoms and determine the most appropriate next steps.

His clinical practice combines extensive experience in rheumatology with specialist ultrasound expertise and access to the latest evidence and developments in rheumatology treatments.

Outside medicine, Dr Wong is married with two sons. He enjoys travelling, competitive tennis, keeping fit with his family and playing scrabble.
