About Professor Christopher Liu OBE
Professor Christopher Liu OBE is a Senior Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon with over four decades of clinical experience in the public sector and more than thirty years in private practice. He was appointed an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2018 New Year Honours for Services to Ophthalmology.
Professor Liu is internationally recognised for his expertise in complex corneal surgery, particularly in artificial corneae (keratoprostheses). He served as the NHS England Lead Consultant at the National Referral Centre for osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis (OOKP), a highly specialised procedure for restoring sight in patients with end-stage corneal blindness. He is one of a very small number of surgeons globally trained to perform this operation.
He has held multiple leadership roles including President of the British Society for Refractive Surgery, Medical Contact Lens and Ocular Surface Association, and Southern Ophthalmological Society. He has served as Honorary Treasurer and Trustee of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, where he was also a Council Member and Regional Representative for the South East.
Professor Liu has published over 250 scientific papers and holds numerous honorary academic appointments in the UK and abroad. He is a UK pioneer in DMEK corneal transplantation and immediately sequential bilateral cataract surgery, with a track record of surgical innovation and invention.

Two years ago I had cataract operations to both eyes. The operations went very smoothly with an excellent recovery. All was as expected from the information Professor Christopher Liu gave me before I went ahead. After two years I am please to say my vision is still excellent.
The treatment and ongoing care that I have received from Professor Liu has been exceptional from start to finish. From the initial consultation appointment to the routine checks following my bilateral eye implant surgery, I genuinely couldn't have hoped for a better service. As someone who was very long-sighted with the onset of cataracts, I chose Professor Liu because my research told me that he is a world leader in lens replacement surgery. However, it is the gentle kindness of Professor Liu that has touched me every bit as much as his technical brilliance, as well as the wonderful additional support provided by his manger, Vivienne Liu. On the few occasions when I have had a query about my eyes, Vivienne has arranged for me to either visit the surgery in person or to speak to Professor Liu by video call without delay and without making me feel like I am being a nuisance. Becoming glasses-free with 20/20 vision has been life changing and I honestly couldn't rate Tongdean Eye Clinic more highly. It is truly exceptional.
From my initial consultation through to surgery and after care, Professor Liu provided an amazing and professional service in friendly reassuring manner. I immediately felt at ease with him as he was able to address all my questions and gave me all the time I needed. I would not hesitate in recommending him to anyone seeking the very best in eye care.
