About

Professor Arul Ramasamy is a Milton Keynes and Northampton based Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a specialist interest in Foot and Ankle surgery. His practice is dedicated solely to foot and ankle surgery and his patient-centred, research driven approach means treatment plans are focused on each patient's individual needs and outcomes. He runs a well-established foot and ankle service throughout various locations in Buckinghamshire and sees over 750 patients a year with varying conditions.

Professor Ramasamy studied Medicine at Trinity Hall, University of Cambridge before going on to complete Basic Surgical Training in Newcastle. He also attended The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst to complete Officer Training and has 25 years experience as a serving British Army Officer.

Professor Ramasamy undertook a PhD in Bio-Engineering at Imperial College London from 2008 to 2011, during which time he completed a thesis on Foot and Ankle combat injuries which led to the development of new technology to reduce blast injuries. He commenced Higher Surgical Training in Orthopaedics and Trauma on the Birmingham Rotation in 2011 and is now Triple Fellowship trained (Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham – Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Oxford – Fortius Clinic, London), including the only UK based Sports Foot & Ankle Fellowship which almost exclusively looked after Professional Athletes.

Throughout his career to date Professor Ramasamy has gained a wealth of experience in the management of high-level athletes as well as in managing complex foot and ankle injuries in military personnel and facilitates swift return to activity. He currently serves as an Army Orthopaedic Surgeon with operational experience in Iraq, Afghanistan and Africa.

In addition to his clinical practice, Professor Ramasamy continues to have a strong academic profile, publishing over 80 peer reviewed academic papers and book chapters.

He works at Imperial College London as supervisor for PhD students studying stem cell research and reducing disability from complex foot and ankle trauma. He is also proud recipient of the highly prestigious ABC (American-British-Canadian) Travelling Fellowship by the British Orthopaedic Association and is winner of over 10 prizes and over £5million in grants relating to his extensive research. He is currently holds the Chair from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and is Head of the Academic Department of Military Trauma and Orthopaedics.

Professor Ramasamy strongly believes that to achieve the best possible outcomes for patients, it involves engaging them in the decision-making process and utilising non-operative techniques where possible. Should surgery be required, he believes that the best results come from meticulous planning and precise execution. He works closely with all his patients to develop a treatment plan which is tailored to their needs and requirements and will help them to return to their normal level of fitness as soon as possible.
