Dr Kumar Abhinav is a Consultant Neurosurgeon with extensive expertise in complex cranial surgery, including skull base, pituitary, and cerebrovascular neurosurgery. He is an internationally renowned neurosurgeon with significant expertise in skull base surgery focussing on the use of minimally invasive approaches like expanded endoscopic endonasal techniques (operation carried out using nose as a corridor to the base of the skull) and transorbital surgery (using eye socket as a corridor to the skull base) to approach pathologies like pituitary adenomas (acromegaly, Cushing's), meningiomas including in skull base, craniopharyngiomas, schwannomas and epidermoid among others.
He takes pride in using these minimally invasive corridors in addition to open craniotomy if needed and is among a handful of surgeons internationally who uses these approaches in a tailored fashion taking into account patients' conditions and their specific needs to ensure the best clinical and surgical outcome.
He has a particular interest also in surgical management of complex pituitary functioning tumours like acromegaly, skull base meningiomas, paediatric skull base pathologies including craniopharyngioma and skull base chordomas and chondrosarcomas and has helped patients nationally and internationally with these pathologies.
His practice also encompasses the management of brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, cavernous malformations, pineal and ventricular lesions, Chiari malformations, hydrocephalus and degenerative spinal conditions.
Dr Abhinav trained in neurosurgery through the South-West national programme (Bristol/Plymouth) and went on to undertake two prestigious clinical operative fellowships over two years at the Department of Neurosurgery, Stanford University, USA. Under the mentorship of Professor Gary K. Steinberg at the Stanford University, USA, he focused on open cerebrovascular neurosurgery over one year followed by a further year at Stanford University, USA focussing on skull base neurosurgery obtaining advanced training in open and expanded endoscopic endonasal approaches under the mentorship of Professor Juan C. Fernandez-Miranda. To lay the foundation for the clinical operative fellowships, he also undertook 2 years of dedicated surgical neuronatomy and imaging research at the prestigious Center for Skull Base Surgery, University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre (UPMC), Pittsburgh, USA.
As a regular invited guest faculty, he has trained surgeons internationally in prestigious surgical courses in countries like the UK, Greece, Spain, India, United States of America and Switzerland. Similarly in Bristol he has set up and directs an internationally renowned skull base course now in its fourth edition training surgeons from all over the world.
His scientifc research rooted in surgical neuroanatomy and refining surgical techniques for patients with skull base and vascular pathologies and surgical results have led to almost 50 peer reviewed publications in prestigious journals like the Neurosurgery, Journal of Neurosurgery and Operative Neurosurgery and multiple presentations in scientific meetings around the world including invited lectures in prestigious meetings like the North American Skull Base Society, European Society of Endocrinology, Argentine Society of Neurosurgery and Society of British Neurosurgeons among others.
As an honorary lecturer in the Department of Anatomy, University of Bristol, Bristol and founding director of the Bristol Complex Cranial Surgical Laboratory, he continues to refine the surgical techniques for his patients by undertaking dedicated research studies.
He graduated with a BSc in Radiological Sciences (2002) and an MBBS (2005) from King’s College London, before completing his FRCS (Neurosurgery) in 2016 and MD based upon his 2-year research work carried out at the UPMC, Pittsburgh, USA in 2020.
Dr Abhinav practices at Southmead Hospital and Spire Hospital, Bristol.

I sought a consultation with Mr Abhinav after months of being misdiagnosed with tension headaches and struggling to navigate a difficult healthcare system in Wales. I was desperately searching for answers.Mr Abhinav immediately provided a professional opinion, identifying suspected low intracranial pressure. His clear guidance and recommendations allowed me to finally navigate the correct medical pathway. Thanks to his expertise, I was accurately diagnosed with a CSF leak within just four weeks of seeing him. I would highly recommend him.
Exceptional care from start to finish. I recently underwent brain surgery performed by Mr Kumar Abhinav, and I could not be happier with the results. From my very first consultation, Mr Kumar Abhinav demonstrated incredible professionalism, thoroughly explaining the procedure, along with the procedural risks and benefits in simple terms so I could understand. He completely alleviated my anxiety and answered every single question without making me feel rushed. The operation itself took longer than excepted but had the best outcome possible. It's not even been a week since surgery and my recovery and my quality of life has vastly improved in such a short amount of time, for example, my sleep has improved, no hot flushes or sweats, my skin has improved, my moods, I'm not in pain or aching everywhere like I use to, there are so many other positives since the operation but those are a few. If you are looking for a highly skilled, compassionate, and meticulous surgeon, I cannot recommend Mr Kumar Abhinav highly enough. I'm so thankful.
Mr Abhinav apart from being a brilliant surgeon, he takes the time to explain things, no rushing in appointments. I recently had brain tumour removal surgery with him in March. He went through what was going to happen in the surgery and I put my full trust in him. I came through the operation and was amazed at the skill needed to perform this surgery through my eye. I am blessed to have found a surgeon like him. Thank you.
Mr Kumar Abhinav was the lead neurosurgeon of a transsfenoidal surgical operation for the resection of our 8-year-old’s craniopharyngioma. This surgery took place at the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, when our child was 7 years old. He and his team answered our several questions about this procedure and alternative treatments. He phoned us the night before the surgery to address further questions we had and to reassure us. He was transparent about the potential complications and about the preventive measures he would take to maximise the chances of the procedure’s success and prevent these possible complications (for example, our child had a preventive lumbar drain to help to deal with potential CSF leak). His team contacted us during the surgery to give us an update on how it was going, and Mr Abhinav came to speak with us in person just after the surgery to give us details of how it had gone. His team visited our child at least once a day during our stay at the hospital following the surgery, and he also came to check our child even though he is based in another hospital. We are very grateful for the care we received at the hospital which has allowed our child to have a very good year following the surgery.
Mr Abhinav helped me understand the exam results in a calm and clear manner.
Fantastic experience. I was taken seriously and given the time and space to talk holistically about my health issue. I was listened to and the conversation that ensued was sensitive, constructive and informative. One of the best consultant conversations I’ve had.
Mr Abhinav was exceptional in every aspect of my care and explained everything with the perfect level of detail. I didn’t feel at all rushed in my follow up appointment and he gave me time to ask any additional questions. He was extremely thorough and I couldn’t have been in better hands.
Was difficult to go through ask the information I had asked sent through taking some time. The 2018 scan results and follow up that dr abinhav was surprised didn’t happen hasn’t been formally noted which is a shame
