Dr Huw Jenkins

Mr Huw Jenkins FRCOphth is a Consultant Ophthalmic and Vitreoretinal Surgeon working in NHS and private practice in West Wales. He offers private cataract surgery, refractive lens exchange, YAG laser treatment and specialist retinal consultations at Werndale Hospital. His NHS practice is based at Glangwili Hospital, Carmarthen, within Hywel Dda University Health Board.

Mr Jenkins graduated from Nottingham University Medical School in 2001 and completed his ophthalmology training in Wales. He undertook vitreoretinal fellowship training at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading, and King Edward VII Hospital, Windsor, between 2013 and 2015. He was appointed as a consultant in Hywel Dda in 2015, when he established the local vitreoretinal service.

He has performed over 5,500 cataract operations since his consultant appointment, including routine and complex cases. He offers individualised lens choices, including enhanced monofocal, toric, extended depth of focus (EDOF) and multifocal lenses for suitable patients. He also provides refractive lens exchange for patients seeking to reduce dependence on glasses or contact lenses.

His specialist experience includes secondary lens implantation and the management of cataract surgery complications. As a vitreoretinal surgeon, he also treats a broad range of retinal conditions within his NHS practice. This experience helps him assess how the health of the whole eye may influence treatment choices and visual outcomes. Private retinal assessment is available at Werndale Hospital; vitreoretinal surgery is not currently offered privately there.

Mr Jenkins is the vitreoretinal service lead and ophthalmology digital lead for Hywel Dda, and co-lead of the West Wales Regional Eye Service. He is an NHS cataract trainer and has previously served as College Tutor and clinical lead for Hywel Dda Ophthalmology. He combines clinical care with surgical teaching and the development of local eye services.

He regularly audits his surgical outcomes to monitor quality and inform his practice. He is a member of BEAVRS, EURETINA, UKISCRS and ESCRS, and a named collaborator in the BEAVRS dataset collaborative group.

Mr Jenkins takes a friendly, patient-centred approach. He listens to each patient's concerns, explains findings in clear language and discusses treatment options, expected benefits, limitations and risks. Decisions are made together, with care tailored to the patient's eye health, daily activities and priorities.
