About Dr Hugo Amaro
Dr Hugo Amaro is a Consultant Psychiatrist and Medical Director at Insight Mental Health. He is on the Specialist Register with the General Medical Council (GMC) and a Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCPsych). He also holds membership with the Portuguese Medical Council and the Portuguese College of Psychiatry, having earned his Licentiate in Medicine (Lic Med) from the University of the Algarve in 2015.
Dr Amaro has extensive expertise in neuromodulation, with training in Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT), Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS), Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), and Neurofeedback. He is a Section 12–approved doctor and DoLS assessor, with wide experience in conducting complex Mental Health Act and Deprivation of Liberty assessments across varied clinical settings.
He has a particular clinical interest in ADHD, having completed UKAAN training in adult ADHD assessment, which he provides alongside comprehensive general adult psychiatry services. His broader areas of interest include mood disorders, anxiety, and schizophrenia.
Complementing his clinical work, Dr Amaro has pursued advanced academic training, holding a Master’s in Educational Psychology, a University Certificate in Postgraduate Professional Development in General Forensic Medicine, a Certificate in Clinical Psychopharmacology, and a PhD in Health Psychology.
