Dr Gavin Third is an experienced psychiatrist specialising in Forensic Psychiatry, currently practising in Edinburgh. He recently completed his higher specialty training (ST6) in forensic psychiatry and has now obtained his Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), marking his transition to consultant-level practice.
Dr Third completed his pre-clinical studies at the University of St Andrews, before completing his medical degree (MBChB) at the University of Edinburgh. He undertook his foundation training in NHS Grampian, followed by several years as a Specialty Doctor in Psychiatry with NHS Borders, where he developed broad experience across psychiatric subspecialties.
He progressed through core psychiatry training in Edinburgh, which included a year as a specialty doctor at The State Hospital, gaining valuable experience in high-secure forensic care. In 2022, he began his higher training in Forensic Psychiatry within the South East Scotland Deanery, based primarily at the Orchard Clinic, the medium-secure forensic unit at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital.
Dr Third has considerable experience in medicolegal reporting, having prepared reports for both the Crown Prosecution Service and defence solicitors, and has given expert witness evidence in multiple criminal cases.
Alongside his NHS work, Dr Third now offers private psychiatric assessment and treatment for mental illness, neurodevelopmental conditions, and medicolegal matters through Edinburgh Psychiatry.
