Mr Fabian Sipaul is a highly regarded and well respected senior E.N.T. (Ear, Nose and Throat) Consultant based at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. This is a tertiary teaching hospital affiliated with University of Southampton Medical School. He was appointed as a consultant in 2014. He is also a visiting consultant at Royal Hampshire County Hospital, Winchester and Royal South Hants Hospital. He holds full registration with General Medical Council (GMC) and completed his five-year revalidation cycle in October 2023. He is up to date with his annual appraisal and is a member of the British Medical Association.
Mr Sipaul diagnose and treats a wide variety of ENT conditions. These range from common ailment such as recurrent tonsillitis to rare entity like retrograde cricopharyngeal dysfunction (inability to burp). He undertakes most E.N.T. surgeries and has a sub-specialist interest in head and neck cancer. He is a core member of the Head & Neck Cancer MDT (multi-disciplinary team) and Thyroid MDT at Southampton General Hospital. He assesses and manages amongst others, symptoms such as persistent sore throat, difficulty swallowing, voice changes, throat sensations and neck lumps. In the majority of cases, he is able to reassure patients after the first visit following flexible nasal endoscopy when appropriate. He has developed expertise in the surgical treatment of head and neck skin lesions, including basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) with reconstruction, often performed under local anaesthesia.
Mr Sipaul was the first surgeon in the world to devise and describe a novel reconstructive technique for external ear canal defect following skin lesion excision. He published ‘A one-stage method for external auditory canal reconstruction: the Wessex pre-auricular flap’ in the European Annals of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Diseases (August 2022).
He is one of a handful of surgeons in the region performing sialendoscopy. This is a minimally invasive technique used to treat salivary gland duct obstruction caused by stones or narrowing, thus avoiding the need for gland removal.
He won a scholarship to attend medical school and qualified from University College, Cork, Ireland in 1997. From there on, the rest of his compulsory surgical training was in the UK. In addition, he voluntarily spent 2 years in New Zealand and Australia for further specialist training. This culminated in his current post as an E.N.T. consultant at Southampton General Hospital.
His wife is originally from New Zealand and is an avid All Blacks fan. They have two teenage daughters in the local state sixth form college and secondary school. They also have two loud but lovable dogs. In his spare time, he enjoys tinkering with DIY, fishing and travelling.
