Professional

Dr Dan Augustine is a consultant cardiologist at the Royal United Hospital Bath and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Bath. He qualified in 2002 from St Bartholomew's and the Royal London Medical School and completed his cardiology training in the South West of England. He has undertaken a cardiovascular imaging research fellowship at the University of Oxford and gained a MD(Res). He has specialty expertise in cardiac imaging (echocardiography and cardiac MRI), sports cardiology, pulmonary hypertension and cardio-oncology. He is the author of the Oxford handbook of Echocardiography (most recent edition published 2020 by Oxford University Press).

In 2021 Dan was awarded one of 4 national fellowships by the British Society of Echocardiography in recognition of his contribution to the field of echocardiography in the UK.

Echocardiography; cardiac MRI; sports cardiology and exercise prescription to those with cardiac conditions; pulmonary hypertension; valve disease; assessment of breathlessness; management of heart failure; chest pain assessment and treatment; hypertension; palpitations / arrhythmias; altered conscious levels (blackouts or near blackouts)

Education

Dan enjoys an active role in teaching and following completion of the Certificate of Medical Education (University of Bristol) he was awarded Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in 2013. He has previously authored three cardiology textbooks (Echocardiography 2013: 2020 and MCQs for the cardiology KBA 2014), all published by Oxford University Press. In 2021 Dan was appointed as Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Bath.

Research

Dan is the cardiology research lead at the RUH Bath NHS Foundation Trust. He has undertaken a research fellowship at the John Radcliffe hospital & University of Oxford (MD 2014) involving the use of advanced imaging in the detection of clinical and sub clinical cardiovascular disease. Dan enjoys supervising PhD and MSc students. Research interests include: novel markers to improve the detection of cardiovascular disease; echocardiography in the detection of pulmonary hypertension; wearable technology in cardiac rehabilitation; stress echocardiography practice in the UK.
