Dr Senthil Jayaseelan is a Consultant in Anaesthesia and Chronic Pain Management with over a decade of substantive NHS consultant experience at Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. He sees private patients at Spire Liverpool, Fairfield Hospital, and the Henley Suite at Whiston and St Helens Hospitals. He is the Lead Consultant for Interventional Pain Management at his trust, where he established and built the interventional pain procedure service in the radiology suite at St Helen's hospital from the ground up.
Dr Jayaseelan holds one of the most comprehensive portfolios of pain medicine credentials in the United Kingdom. In addition to his CCT in Anaesthetics and Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (FRCA), he holds the FFPMRCA — the highest specialist examination award in pain medicine in the UK, conferred by the Faculty of Pain Medicine, Royal College of Anaesthetists, in the inaugural cohort — alongside the FIPP (Fellow of the World Institute of Pain) and the ESRA-DPM (European Diploma of Pain Medicine). Very few consultants in the UK hold all three international fellowships in pain medicine. Reflecting the confidence placed in his expertise, he currently serves as an examiner for both the FFPMRCA and ESRA-DPM examinations, helping set the national and European standards by which other pain medicine specialists are assessed.
His training pathway took him across three UK regions — the East Midlands, Scotland, and Mersey — before two prestigious advanced fellowships: one at the National Refractory Angina Centre, Liverpool, focusing on complex and refractory cardiac pain, and one at the Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust, Liverpool, one of the UK's foremost centres for chronic pain medicine and interventional procedures. He is also an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at the University of Liverpool and a faculty member of the European Society of Regional Anaesthesia and Pain Therapy (ESRA), where he teaches at international workshops across Europe.
Dr Jayaseelan understands that living with chronic pain affects far more than just the physical — it touches every aspect of daily life. His approach is unhurried, thorough, and always built around the individual. He takes time to listen, to understand the full picture, and to explain treatment options clearly before designing a personalised plan. He has particular expertise in spinal and musculoskeletal pain (including neck pain, back pain, sciatica, facet joint disease, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, upper and lower limb joint pain), complex and refractory conditions such as complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) and neuropathic pain, and post-surgical or transitional pain — helping patients who have developed, or are at risk of developing, chronic pain following an operation.
He performs a comprehensive range of fluoroscopy- and ultrasound-guided interventional procedures, including epidural injections, nerve root blocks, facet joint injections and radiofrequency denervation, sacroiliac joint treatments, sympathetic nerve blocks, and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections. He is a published author, with book chapters in Oxford University Press and Cambridge University Press titles, and has presented his quality improvement work at the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) World Congress.
