About Dr Robert Marshall

Dr. Robert Marshall earned an Academic Scholarship to Canford School in Dorset, before completing his medical degree at the United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy’s and St Thomas’s Hospitals in London. Following junior medical roles in the capital, he pursued general professional training at Derriford Hospital, Plymouth. In 2001, Dr. Marshall relocated to Bristol to commence his rheumatology training at the Bristol Royal Infirmary, preceded by a year-long Educational Fellowship in Bristol and Bath. Subsequently, he concluded his training in Hampshire, spanning Portsmouth, Bournemouth, and Poole.

Joining the Bristol Royal Infirmary as a Consultant in 2006, Dr. Marshall has been dedicated to enhancing the standard of care. His efforts include the expansion of the rheumatology department, implementation of innovative care pathways, leadership in audits, and mentorship of medical students and junior physicians. His contributions were recognised with a British Society for Rheumatology Best Practice Award in 2013. He was Clinical Lead from 2014 to 2020, and continued to nurture a culture of exemplary clinical practice, research, and education.

Dr Marshall has been active in Private Rheumatology Practice since 2011, and has a wealth of experience in diagnosing and treating private patients. He has expertise across the spectrum of rheumatic diseases, and is always happy to see patients for second opinions.

2026 marks 30 years since qualifying as a doctor, 25 years since entering rheumatology, and 20 years since becoming a consultant. During that time he has helped thousands of patients in diagnosing and managing their rheumatic diseases.

Dr Marshall was cheerful, friendly and sincere right from the very moment I met him for an initial consultation and I believe he is a first class consultant all round. He took my concerns seriously and the depth of his experience was evident from the kinds of follow up questions he asked and investigations he conducted. After just two consultations he was able to identify the cause of my primary symptoms thanks to his rigour in conducting diagnostic tests, and he also conclusively ruled out various other diagnoses (I have full faith in his conclusions). This was in spite of the fact that my primary concern ended up being related to a complex renal problem as opposed to a rheumatic one. As a senior/clinical lead he also has an expansive local network and was able to refer me to a highly specialised consultant for my renal condition. Overall it was an incredibly positive, impactful and efficient experience and Dr Marshall is very caring and passionate about what he does. I can’t recommend him highly enough.

Had an excellent bedside manner with my 18 year son, who is high functioning ASD. Listened sympathetically and patiently, asking the right questions and engaging with him very positively. Provided a potential diagnosis, following up with a comprehensive plan of further tests leaving us with confidence that we will get to the cause of the issues he has with his shoulders and wrists.
