Dr Peter Merry qualified at St Thomas' Hospital Medical School University of London in 1981.
Specialist Training in both Rheumatology and General Medicine was as
i) SHO at St Thomas' Hospital London, ii) Registrar at St George's
Hospital London, iii) Senior Registrar at St Thomas', St Mary's, and
Charing Cross Hospitals London, 1989 – 1991. Research training was as
an Arthritis Research Campaign Research Fellow at The Bone and Joint
Research Unit attached to The Royal London Hospital. Dr Merry's
research was investigating the role of "Free Radicals" in inflammatory
arthritis. An MD was awarded in 1990 by London University entitled
"Hypoxic-repefusion injury in the inflamed human joint."
Dr Merry was appointed Consultant Rheumatologist at The Norfolk and
Norwich University Hospital in 1991. He was Clinical Director in
Rheumatology from 1995 – 2008. He has established special interest
clinics in back pain and connective tissue disease, having worked and
performed research at the lupus unit at St Thomas' Hospital London. His
main specialist clinical interest is backpain/sciatica. He has been innovative in
setting up a back pain service in Norwich that has included epidurals,
discolysis with chymopapain, and intradiscal electrothermal therapy
(IDET).
Dr Merry has extensive experience in the management of Rheumatoid
Arthritis and other inflammatory arthritis, with particular expertise in
anti –TNF therapies/Biologioc therapies, with the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital having vast experience in these therapies.
Dr Merry has developed a particular clinical interest in gout.
Dr Merry has developed an extensive medico-legal practice that includes personal injury and clinical negligence claims.
