Dr Jayesh Makan

Dr. Jayesh Makan is a consultant cardiologist based in Shrewsbury, renowned for his expertise in diagnosing and treating a wide range of cardiac conditions. His clinical focus includes managing chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations, heart rhythm disturbances, and blackouts. Dr. Makan has a particular interest in sports cardiology and has recently been awarded a Master’s degree in the field at St George’s Hospital, University of London, supported by a prestigious full scholarship. His private practice operates at Nuffield Health Shrewsbury Hospital, while he serves the NHS at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust.

Dr. Makan’s medical journey began at Guy's and St Thomas', where he earned his medical degree and a BSc (Hons) in Immunology. His cardiology training was completed in London, including three years as a Specialist Registrar at the Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Trust. During this time, he developed advanced expertise in pacemaker, defibrillator, and biventricular pacemaker implantation, achieving certification as a Cardiac Device Specialist from the International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners.

Joining Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust as a consultant in 2011, Dr. Makan established a state-of-the-art complex cardiac device service for the region. As Clinical Director of Cardiology from 2013, he led the department for nearly a decade before transitioning to an educational role as Undergraduate Tutor at Keele University Medical School. Recently, he was appointed Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at St George’s Hospital, London, and was recognised as a Covid-19 Hero for his dedication during the pandemic.

Dr. Makan is very engaged in clinical research, particularly in sports cardiology and inherited cardiac diseases. Between 2003 and 2005, he conducted groundbreaking research funded by Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) under the mentorship of Professor Sanjay Sharma, a global authority in the field. His research contributions have been widely published in peer-reviewed journals and he has authored book chapters and presented at international conferences. 

An avid athlete and runner, Dr. Makan has completed the London Marathon twice, once for Greenwich Hospice and most recently for CRY. He is a member of several esteemed professional organisations, including the International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners and the European Heart Rhythm Association, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians.
