Dr Andrew Iles

Dr Andrew Iles is a highly experienced Consultant Psychiatrist working in both private practice and the NHS. He trained on the prestigious Maudsley training scheme and has held consultant appointments within leading mental health organisations, including South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, St Andrew’s Healthcare and Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.

Having qualified as a doctor in 2004, Dr Iles completed postgraduate psychiatric training across London, Oxford, Berkshire and South Wales before being appointed as a Consultant Psychiatrist in 2011. He has extensive experience in the assessment and treatment of complex, severe and treatment-resistant mental disorders and is frequently consulted for diagnostic clarification, specialist second opinions and treatment reviews where previous interventions have been unsuccessful.

He continues to practise as an NHS Consultant Psychiatrist, leading the care of patients with complex mental health needs and maintaining an active role in frontline clinical practice. Throughout his career, he has worked across a wide range of psychiatric settings, including rehabilitation psychiatry, specialist services and senior clinical leadership roles. His experience includes the management of enduring mental illness, personality difficulties, eating-related disorders, significant risk histories and complex diagnostic presentations.

Dr Iles has particular expertise in psychopharmacology, adult ADHD and the optimisation of psychiatric medication. He is highly experienced in reviewing treatment where symptoms have not responded adequately, where diagnoses require reconsideration, or where medication has caused difficulties with effectiveness or tolerability. His approach combines careful diagnostic assessment, evidence-based prescribing and comprehensive formulation to ensure that recommendations are effective, safe and individualised. He works closely with GPs, psychologists, therapists and other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated and effective care.

Alongside his clinical work, Dr Iles has contributed to the psychiatric literature through publications in peer-reviewed journals and professional publications, including BJPsych Advances, Therapeutic Advances in Psychopharmacology, The Primary Care Companion for CNS Disorders and The Pharmaceutical Journal. He is also co-author of How to Pass the MRCPsych CASC, published by Oxford University Press. His academic interests include psychopharmacology, ADHD, complex mental illness and the interface between physical and mental health.

Dr Iles is actively involved in postgraduate medical education and currently serves as Training Programme Director for the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Forensic Psychiatry Training Programme, supporting the development of future consultant psychiatrists.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr Iles is an established expert witness, providing independent psychiatric evidence in criminal, civil and tribunal proceedings. His expertise is regularly sought in cases involving complex psychiatric diagnosis, risk assessment, capacity and causation.
