Mr Ciaran McGarvey is an experienced consultant orthopaedic surgeon specialising exclusively in knee surgery. He offers treatment for sports injuries and chronic conditions affecting the knee. He is a consultant at Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust (Heatherwood and Wexham Park) and works privately at The Princess Margaret Hospital in Windsor and Spire Thames Valley Hospital.
Mr McGarvey graduated from Cambridge University and completed his specialist orthopaedic training at Guy’s, King’s, and St Thomas’s Hospitals in London. He gained further specialist experience working with two internationally recognised knee surgeons: Professor Ponky Firer in Johannesburg and Mr Tim Spalding in Coventry. He served as matchday team doctor for Saracens Rugby Club from 2012-2016.
Mr McGarvey will always try to find a non-surgical solution for your knee problem, often in combination with a network of local physiotherapists. Where surgery is needed, Mr McGarvey performs knee ligament reconstruction, meniscus repair, and cartilage repair. He offers joint-preserving surgery for early knee osteoarthritis, such as osteotomy and focal resurfacing. For established arthritis, he performs joint replacement surgery including partial and total knee replacement. He is certified to perform MAKO robotic-assisted partial and total knee replacement.

Mr McGarvey was very professional, very knowledgeable and very sympathetic. He made a quick diagnosis and explained all of my options and expected outcomes in great detail, and he answered all of my questions thoroughly. On the day of the surgery Mr McGarvey and his theatre team were outstanding, very professional and sympathetic and despite me being extremely nervous I was left in no doubt that I was in safe hands. Mr McGarvey visited me in hospital the following day to ensure that everything was ok, this was a Saturday morning which was unexpected and very much appreciated.

Mr McGarvey has literally changed my life after 2 partial knee replacements this year. After 20 years of pain I can now walk properly. Mr McGarvey was very thorough explaining everything including my X-rays, recovery which was very quick. A nice man and amazing surgeon.
The whole experience for my total knee replacement on the 2nd June 2023 was excellent. Mr McGarvey explained the process and recovery in full and I clearly understood everything including the post operative recovery. I was discharged at 6 weeks and the Physio was pleased with my rate of recovery and mobility at this stage. The scar is very neat and not raised at all. I actually climbed to the Crown of the Statue of Liberty in New York 5 months after my surgery so as you can see I am really pleased with Mr McGarvey's surgery skills.
