About Dr Anurag Garg
Mr Anurag Garg is an award-winning Consultant Ophthalmologist based at Guy's & St
Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.
He studied Medicine at Imperial College London, graduating with a First Class Honours
intercalated BSc in Medical Sciences with Neuroscience and with double distinction in his MBBS finals in 2009.
He undertook ophthalmology residency training in the South London Deanery, during which he completed an MD(Res) at University College London under the supervision of Professor Gus Gazzard, based on the multicentre LiGHT Trial. He went on to complete two subspecialty fellowships in glaucoma, at Moorfields Eye Hospital and St Thomas' Hospital. He later completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Cataract and Refractive Surgery from Ulster University.
His clinical practice spans three core areas: cataract surgery, acute and general
ophthalmology, and the medical and laser management of glaucoma.
In cataract surgery, Anurag offers the full range of monofocal and premium intraocular
lens strategies — extended monofocal, extended depth of focus (EDOF), multifocal and toric lenses — tailored to each patient's visual needs and lifestyle. With over 1,300 surgeries performed to date, he maintains a posterior capsule rupture rate of under 1%, reflecting a consistently safe surgical track record. As part of the cataract service at St Thomas' Hospital, he performs weekly surgical lists and is responsible for the teaching and surgical training of residents and fellows.
In acute and general ophthalmology, his leadership of the Rapid Access Eye Clinic at St
Thomas' Hospital gives him particular depth in the assessment and management of urgent presentations, within a high-acuity tertiary referral setting.
In glaucoma, his subspecialty training and MD(Res) research are complemented by more than 25 peer-reviewed publications, including papers in The Lancet, Ophthalmology, Eye and Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science (IOVS). He conducts weekly glaucoma clinic and laser lists as part of his NHS practice at St Thomas' Hospital.
