Cleveland Clinic London surgeons have begun performing hip resurfacing with ceramic implants, becoming among the first in the world to offer this alternative to the traditional metal-on-metal procedure.

The H1 ceramic implant, developed at Imperial College London by Cleveland Clinic London surgeon Prof Justin Cobb, was approved by the UK’s MHRA in 2025. ﻿﻿﻿Unlike metal-on-metal implants, which were suitable only for patients with larger bones, the H1 ceramic implant is designed to make hip resurfacing possible for patients with smaller hips and pelvises.

﻿"This innovation means more patients can benefit from hip resurfacing, preserving their bone and restoring near-natural movement," say Prof Cobb.

Clinical studies have shown that patients receiving the H1 implant achieved biomechanics similar to those with healthy hips - a result not seen with traditional total hip replacements. ﻿﻿﻿The H1 implant is currently available in the UK under compassionate use, with a broader European rollout planned for 2026.

We are excited to announce that Dr Magdi Saba, Consultant Cardiologist and Associate Professor of Electrophysiology, has been awarded the 2025 J T Willerson Award for Clinical Science. This recognises the best clinical publication in the journal Circulation and commemorates Dr Willerson, the journal’s former Editor-in-Chief.

The award was proudly received this month by Dr Saba and Dr Anthony Li's PhD student, Dr Michael Waight.

The study shows that doctors can now use personalised ﻿virtual copies of a patient’s heart﻿ to plan treatments for ventricular tachycardia (VT), a fast and sometimes dangerous heart rhythm that starts in the lower chambers of the heart. These virtual copies of the heart help doctors pinpoint the areas causing abnormal rhythms, making treatments safer, more precise, and more effective.

Rich joined Cleveland Clinic London in March 2025 and is known as a trusted, empathetic leader and a go-to source of guidance and reassurance. His kindness, approachability and commitment to supporting work-life balance make him a valued presence across the team. 

In his role, Rich supports operational leadership across the Cardiac, Electrophysiology and Interventional Radiology labs. Working closely with clinicians, nurses and physiologists to deliver complex, minimally invasive procedures using state of the art technology to provide exceptional patient care every day.
