Dr Sonia Moorthy

Dr Sonia Moorthy is a highly experienced consultant ophthalmologist, cataract surgeon, and laser vision correction specialist based on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland. 

As Founder and Medical Director of EyeHub, she is recognised for delivering advanced, patient-centred eye care across cataract surgery, laser vision correction, glaucoma management, paediatric ophthalmology, dry eye disease, and general ophthalmology. 

Born in Malaysia, Dr Moorthy moved to Dundee, Scotland to pursue her medical degree at the University of Dundee. Following graduation, she worked in the United Kingdom before relocating to Australia in 2007. She later completed a Master of Public Health in Epidemiology and Biostatistics through the University of Melbourne, providing a strong foundation in evidence-based medicine, research, and healthcare
leadership. 

Dr Moorthy completed her specialist ophthalmology training through the Sydney Eye Hospital and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (FRANZCO). She subsequently undertook prestigious international fellowships in Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus at the Singapore National Eye Centre and the internationally renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. 

Committed to advancing her surgical expertise, Dr Moorthy has completed extensive international training in refractive surgery, including advanced programs with world-leading surgeons in Europe, India, and the United Kingdom. She holds advanced diplomas in Laser Refractive Surgery and specialises in modern vision correction procedures, including SMILE PRO, LASIK, PRESBYOND Laser Blended Vision, PRK, and Refractive Lens Exchange. 

Dr Moorthy leads the laser vision correction services at EyeHub and was responsible for introducing the first ZEISS VisuMax 800 Femtosecond laser platform in Queensland. 

Dr Moorthy completed a Diploma in Refractive Surgery with Prof. Jorge Alio and has undergone practical and theoretical laser refractive training with Prof. Sri Ganesh and Prof. Dan Reinstein, global leaders and innovators in laser vision correction. 

Dr. Moorthy strongly believes in merging leading technological innovation with personalised, evidence-based ophthalmic care. She is also committed to training the next generation of ophthalmologists and serves on the following Boards.  

• RANZCO Ophthalmic Sciences Board of Examiners. 
• RANZCO Women in Ophthalmology Committee. 
• RANZCO Central Trainee Selection Committee. 

Dr. Moorthy is passionate about regional ophthalmology and advocating for patients in regional areas, with a recent podcast entitled Eyes In Region. Dr Moorthy was featured on the Everyone Has a Story podcast, featuring Sunshine Coast locals in an episode titled Giving Back tothe Community.
