Dr Robert Purssey

Dr Robert Purssey is a highly qualified Consultant Psychiatrist who specialises in providing comprehensive mental health care. He is dedicated to helping his patients achieve long-lasting benefits and live rich, full, and meaningful lives. Dr Purssey integrates evidence-based psychotherapy with scientifically grounded, cautious psychopharmacology. He is particularly passionate about Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), a modern form of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy that focuses on mindfulness, acceptance, and values-based action to help individuals navigate psychological pain and life challenges.

Throughout his career, Dr Purssey has developed extensive expertise in managing a wide range of complex mental health conditions. His clinical interests encompass adult and adolescent psychiatry, with a particular focus on anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. He also provides specialised care for individuals experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder, complex trauma, eating disorders, and substance addictions. Additionally, Dr Purssey supports patients dealing with chronic pain, brain injuries, and life transitions, tailoring his therapeutic approach to meet the unique needs of each individual.

Dr Purssey completed his medical education at the University of Queensland, where he obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). He completed his specialist psychiatric training in 2004, earning fellowship with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP). He is an active member of several professional bodies, holding accredited memberships within the Faculty of Adult Psychiatry, the Faculty of Psychotherapy, the Faculty of Addiction Psychiatry, and the Faculty of Forensic Psychiatry. Alongside his clinical practice, he serves as a Clinical Senior Lecturer in Psychiatry at the University of Queensland, where he contributes to the training of future Psychologists and Doctors.
