About Professor Peter Teddy

Professor Peter Teddy is a highly esteemed Senior Neurosurgeon at Precision Health and The Royal Melbourne Hospital with over 45 years of experience. His exceptional skills also find expression through consultations and surgeries at several prominent private hospitals, including Melbourne Private Hospital, Linacre Private Hospital, and Masada. Additionally, he holds the esteemed position of Professorial Fellow in Neurosurgery in the Department of Surgery at Melbourne University.

Born in New Zealand, Professor Teddy pursued his education in the UK, where he excelled at the University of Oxford Medical School as a Hobson Memorial Scholar. Graduating in 1973, he garnered recognition, winning the Radcliffe Infirmary Prizes in both Medicine and Surgery. Before completing his clinical studies, he engaged in a three-year research period as a Medical Research Council Scholar, culminating in the award of a Doctor of Philosophy from Oxford. His research focused on neurotransmitters in the brain, conducted under the guidance of the Regius Professor of Medicine.

The impressive journey of Professor Teddy continued, attaining the FRCS (Eng) in 1977 and pursuing post-fellowship neurosurgical training primarily at the Department of Neurological Surgery at the Radcliffe Infirmary. His training also involved valuable experiences at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town and a coveted secondment to the Universitaetsspital in Zurich, collaborating closely with the renowned neurosurgeon Professor Gazi Yasargil.

In 1981, Professor Teddy was appointed as a consultant neurosurgeon in Oxford, where he gained vast experience across various realms of neurosurgical practice. Throughout his career, he developed sub-specialist interests in the neurosurgical treatment of intractable pain, functional neurosurgery (mainly spinal), intrinsic tumours of the spinal cord, and neurosurgical sequelae of spinal cord injury. During the late 1990s, he assumed the esteemed position of Head of the Department of Neurological Surgery.

In 2004, Professor Teddy moved to Melbourne, marking a significant chapter in his career. In 2005, he was recognized with both FRACS and Fellowship of The Faculty of Pain Medicine, ANZ College of Anaesthetists. He was also honoured as an Emeritus Fellow at St Peter's College.

Alongside his general neurosurgical practice, Professor Teddy actively contributes to teaching undergraduates and neurosurgical trainees. He serves as the Supervisor of Training for the Faculty of Pain Medicine in the College of Anaesthetists. As a distinguished member of the Editorial Committee for The Journal of Clinical Neuroscience, he continues to make significant contributions to the field.

Professor Teddy is renowned globally as an authority on the neurosurgical treatment of pain, encompassing facial pain and headaches, spinal problems, and neuropathic pain.
