Dr Paul James

Dr Paul James is a highly accomplished Clinical Geneticist who specialises in translating complex genomic science into compassionate, patient-centred care. With a focus on identifying and managing inherited conditions, he works closely with individuals and families to help them understand their genetic health. His clinical practice encompasses a broad range of genetic assessments, providing patients with the clarity and reassurance needed to make informed decisions about their healthcare journeys.

His primary areas of clinical interest include familial cancer syndromes, such as hereditary breast and ovarian cancer, Lynch syndrome, and Li-Fraumeni syndrome. Dr James is also deeply involved in the genetics of inherited cardiac disorders, including dilated cardiomyopathy, and the investigation of sudden cardiac death in young people. He is a strong advocate for genomic precision medicine, utilising advanced tools like polygenic risk scores to deliver highly personalised risk assessments and tailored screening recommendations.

Dr James completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at the University of Otago in 1994. He subsequently undertook advanced academic training, obtaining his Doctor of Philosophy in Anatomy and Genetics from the University of Oxford in 2007. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and has been elected as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences, reflecting his significant contributions to the field of medical genetics.
