Is a registered periodontal specialist and has held a UK GDC specialist registration. He holds dual Master’s Degrees in Periodontology, and Clinical Dentistry.. He has been awarded by full hospital training and examination; Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (in special field streams of oral maxillofacial surgery and oral medicine), was subsequently examined and conferred the higher specialist Fellowship in Periodontics at the Royal College of Surgeons, in Ireland, and was admitted by examination to the full Membership in Restorative Dentistry at the Royal College of Surgeons in England. He studied Dentistry at University College Hospital in London while completing an honours degree in 2 years in Anatomy at University College London supported by a full two year Medical Research Council Scholarship.
Matt presented and defended his Masters Thesis at the Royal Society in the field of class switching antibiotic resistance genes in periodontitis. His UCL Aatomy thesis was the first on 3D laser scanning of osteocyte density changes in facial growth mosaics and he received Firsts for a theses on dental pulp ultra-microstructure with the first pulp isolation technique ever published, and on the first 3D coding simulation of tissue reconstruction. He is an expert molecular biologist and cytogeneticist with a particular interest in morphogenesis and neuroanatomy. He was awarded the international Harty Medal of the British Endodontic Society for root canal contributions, the operative technique prize in precision fillings and onlay/inlays, and Prosthetics denture essay prize. He completed training as House and Senior House Surgeon in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Roehampton and Northampton hospitals, part of the Oxford Deanery, and completed his surgical Fellowship. He was offered a full MRC training Fellowship whilst reading for a PhD in repairing stem cell metastatic genes at UCL, and created the UCL cancer stem cell tissue bank.
Whilst a specialist registrar at King College, he taught final year dental undergraduates and hygienists, and on completion moved to Sydney at Westmead Hospital, ran the Specialist Periodontal Unit as a staff specialist and Lecturer then Senior Lecturer in Periodontology at University of Sydney. He trained over 40 registrars in periodontology and related fields, and over 800 undergraduates. He subsequently trained hygienists and dentists in advanced periodontal techniques and concepts. He introduced and ran stem cell for the first time to Westmead Oral Medicine registrars to allow them to complete research theses. He currently runs courses in microsurgical regeneration of gum and bone tissue around teeth and implants. He provides currently individual coaching for dentists and specialists in preparation for primary and secondary Fellowship examinations and specialist entry programs.
