Dr Martin MacDonald

Associate Professor Martin MacDonald is a highly regarded Respiratory Physician and Sleep Physician who provides comprehensive care for patients experiencing a wide range of respiratory and sleep disorders. With a reassuring and patient-centred approach, Dr MacDonald focuses on delivering evidence-based clinical care tailored to each individual's needs. His clinical expertise spans a broad spectrum of conditions, with a particular interest in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), severe asthma, and the complex relationship between respiratory and cardiac health.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr MacDonald is heavily involved in medical research and academia. He holds an academic appointment as an Associate Professor and serves as a Doctoral Supervisor, guiding the next generation of Medical Researchers. His own research, which earned him a Doctor of Philosophy, investigated the clinical phenotyping of COPD exacerbations and how they interact with heart disease. Dr MacDonald has published extensively in leading international medical journals and contributes to the broader medical community as a Deputy Editor for a prominent respiratory journal. He also regularly supports the professional development of General Practitioners and Advanced Trainees in his field.

Dr MacDonald completed his undergraduate medical degree and basic training as a Physician in the United Kingdom before relocating to Australia to undertake advanced training in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine. He holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB), a Bachelor of Medical Science with Honours (BMedSci (Hons)), and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Dr MacDonald is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) and a Member of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) in the United Kingdom. He is also actively involved with professional bodies, including the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand and the European Respiratory Society.
