Dr Luigi Sposato

Dr Luigi Sposato is a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon with specialist expertise in colorectal surgery, minimally invasive techniques, and the management of complex bowel conditions. He completed his medical degree at the University of Tasmania before undertaking surgical training in Melbourne, Victoria.

Following his general surgical training, Dr Sposato developed skills in acute general surgery before pursuing his passion for colorectal surgery through specialist fellowship training. He completed Colon and Rectal Surgery fellowships at Flinders Medical Centre and Western General Hospital, Edinburgh, gaining experience in high-volume colorectal units and developing expertise in laparoscopic surgery, inflammatory bowel disease, and colorectal cancer management.

His international training has helped him develop advanced skills in minimally invasive colorectal procedures and the management of complex surgical cases.

Dr Sposato returned to Australia in 2018 to join the Colorectal Unit at Flinders Medical Centre, where he continues his clinical practice alongside his interests in teaching future surgeons, research and medical education through its affiliation with Flinders University.

He is passionate about delivering modern, evidence-based colorectal and general surgical care, with a focus on improved recovery and patient outcomes.

Luigi is also a active contributor to colorectal research, clinical trials and multidisciplinary care, with peer-reviewed publications in colorectal surgery, gastrointestinal physiology, endocrinology and cardiothoracic surgery.
