Dr Kate Wyburn

Dr Kate Wyburn is a highly accomplished Nephrologist and Transplant Physician who has dedicated her career to the field of renal medicine. As a Senior Staff Specialist and Head of Kidney Transplantation, she provides expert care to patients navigating complex kidney conditions. Dr Wyburn is particularly recognised for her clinical leadership in organ donation and transplantation policy, serving in prominent advisory roles to improve patient outcomes and organ allocation systems. Her reassuring and patient-centred approach ensures that individuals facing renal disease receive comprehensive, compassionate, and cutting-edge care.

With a deep interest in transplant immunology, Dr Wyburn specialises in managing highly sensitised kidney transplantations, including human leukocyte antigen (HLA) and ABO blood group incompatible transplants. Her clinical expertise spans a broad spectrum of renal medicine, including general nephrology, renal genetics, glomerulonephritis, and the management of end-stage kidney disease through haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. She is also actively involved in clinical research aimed at improving donor suitability assessments and enhancing the long-term success of living donor kidney transplantations.

Dr Wyburn completed her medical training with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, alongside a Bachelor of Science with Honours. She later obtained her Doctor of Philosophy in Medicine in 2006, focusing her doctoral research on transplant immunology. She is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. Demonstrating her commitment to advancing her field, she serves as the President-elect of the Transplantation Society of Australia and New Zealand and is the Chair of the Renal Transplant Advisory Committee. Additionally, she contributes to medical education as a Clinical Associate Professor, sharing her extensive knowledge with the next generation of medical professionals.
