Dr John Down

Dr John Down is a dedicated and compassionate Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and Paediatric Neuropsychiatrist who specialises in supporting young people and their families. He is committed to providing a supportive, empathic, and understanding environment, ensuring that each patient receives comprehensive and tailored care. Believing strongly in a multidisciplinary approach to healthcare, Dr Down collaborates closely with other healthcare providers to enhance the overall quality of care and support functional outcomes for his young patients.

Dr Down completed his Bachelor of Science with Honours before earning his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the University of Queensland. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP). To further enrich his clinical expertise, he also completed an additional fellowship year in paediatric neurology at a leading children's hospital, equipping him with a deep understanding of the intersection between neurological and psychiatric conditions.

With a particular interest in neuropsychiatry, Dr Down focuses on a wide range of neurodevelopmental and psychiatric conditions. His clinical areas of interest include child and adolescent obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), anxiety, Tourette Syndrome, and tic disorders. He also works extensively with neuroinflammatory causes of psychiatric symptoms, such as Paediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections (PANDAS) and Paediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS), as well as Autism and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In addition to his clinical practice, Dr Down is deeply committed to medical research and education, actively teaching Junior Doctors and investigating novel treatments, such as the efficacy of cannabidiol for young people with Tourette Syndrome.
