About Prof. Jaswinder Samra

Professor Jaswinder Samra is a Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of Sydney and a highly regarded specialist in pancreatic and hepatobiliary surgery. He graduated in medicine and completed his surgical training in the United Kingdom, including a prestigious three-year Wellcome Trust Research Fellowship at the University of Oxford, where he was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil). This early academic experience established his lifelong commitment to integrating scientific research with surgical practice.

After moving to Australia, Professor Samra completed his surgical training at Royal North Shore Hospital. For the past nineteen years, he has practised as a surgeon in Northern Sydney, working at Royal North Shore Hospital and Ryde Hospital. He has played a key clinical role in the Australian Pancreatic Genome Initiative and has been instrumental in establishing specialist services for pancreatic cancer and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumours at Royal North Shore Hospital and North Shore Private Hospital.

Professor Samra has a strong interest in surgical innovation and the integration of new technologies into clinical care. He was the first da Vinci-accredited robotic general surgeon in Australia and the first surgeon in New South Wales to perform a robotic distal pancreatectomy and robotic liver resection. He has presented his unit’s work nationally and internationally and remains actively involved in both basic and clinical research.

In recognition of his significant contributions to pancreatic cancer research and his service to medicine as a pancreatic specialist, Professor Samra was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2019.
