Dr Ian Balson

Dr Ian Balson is a highly qualified Specialist Anaesthetist dedicated to providing safe, compassionate, and high-quality care to his patients. With a reassuring and patient-focused approach, he works closely with surgical teams to ensure optimal pain management and patient safety before, during, and after medical procedures. His clinical practice encompasses a diverse range of surgical specialties, reflecting his broad expertise in the field of medicine.

Throughout his career, Dr Balson has developed a particular interest in obstetric anaesthesia and pain relief during labour, helping expectant mothers navigate childbirth with comfort and confidence. In addition to obstetric care, he regularly provides anaesthetic services for a wide variety of surgical procedures, including orthopaedic surgery, plastic surgery, and ear, nose, and throat (ENT) surgery. He is committed to tailoring his anaesthetic techniques to the unique needs of each individual patient, ensuring a smooth and reassuring surgical experience.

Dr Balson completed his undergraduate medical training at the University of Melbourne, qualifying with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in 1983. He went on to undertake specialist training in anaesthesia, which included dedicated rotations in paediatric and obstetric anaesthesia, as well as an overseas fellowship that provided him with valuable international experience in the United Kingdom and the United States. In 1992, he obtained his professional qualification as a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (FANZCA). To maintain the highest standards of patient care, he is actively involved in the College of Anaesthetists Continuing Professional Development Programme and is a member of the Anaesthetic Continuing Education Society.

Beyond his clinical anaesthetic practice, Dr Balson is deeply committed to the well-being of his colleagues and the broader medical community. He holds a Graduate Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy, which allows him to provide valuable support and counselling to fellow Medical Practitioners. This holistic understanding of mental health and professional well-being further enhances his empathetic, patient-centred approach to care.
