Prof. David Gillatt

Prof. David Gillatt is a highly distinguished Urologist and Specialist Surgeon who is internationally recognised for his expertise in urological oncology and robotic-assisted surgery. With a career dedicated to the treatment of complex pelvic cancers, he specialises in the management of prostate and bladder cancers. Prof. Gillatt is widely regarded as a pioneer in robotic surgery, having performed thousands of major resections. His clinical focus also extends to general urology, men's health, and the development of innovative recovery protocols, such as introducing a globally recognised enhanced recovery programme for cystectomy.

In addition to his clinical practice, Prof. Gillatt is a leading Academic and Researcher who has held prominent leadership roles, including serving as a Director of Medical Services and a Professor of Urological Oncology and Robotic Surgery. His research contributions are extensive, particularly in the discovery and optimisation of biomarkers for the early diagnosis and prognosis of prostate cancer. He also investigates the impact of ketamine abuse on bladder function. Throughout his career, he has been instrumental in establishing major urological research and care centres, fostering a multidisciplinary team approach to ensure the highest standards of patient care.

Prof. Gillatt obtained his primary medical qualification, a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB ChB), from the University of Manchester in 1980. He subsequently earned a Master of Surgery (ChM) from the University of Bristol in 1993. Committed to the highest standards of surgical practice, he is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (obtained in 1984), a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (obtained in 1985), and was awarded a Fellowship in Urology by the Royal College of Surgeons in 1993. Furthermore, he holds a Fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, which was awarded in 2015.
