Dr Carly Hughes is a highly dedicated and compassionate Clinical Pathologist and Clinical Microbiologist who specialises in the diagnosis and management of complex infectious diseases. With a dual focus on clinical care and laboratory diagnostics, Dr Hughes plays a vital role in identifying pathogens and guiding targeted treatment plans for patients. Her reassuring and methodical approach ensures that even the most complex medical cases are investigated with the utmost precision and care.

Throughout her career, Dr Hughes has developed a particular clinical interest in infections affecting immunocompromised hosts, tropical medicine, and emerging infectious diseases. She is highly skilled in diagnostic stewardship, quality assurance, and the implementation of advanced molecular and serological testing within the laboratory. Her expertise also extends to public health initiatives and the management of deep-seated bacterial infections, ensuring that laboratory findings translate directly into effective, patient-centred clinical outcomes.

Dr Hughes completed her Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery at James Cook University, qualifying in 2007. She then undertook a comprehensive dual training programme in infectious diseases and microbiology across Newcastle and Melbourne. She holds a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) and a Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (FRCPA). In addition to her clinical and laboratory work, she is actively involved in medical education, dedicating her time to the mentorship and wellbeing of medical trainees.
