Professor Bilal Al-Sarireh is a Laparoscopic General and Gastrointestinal surgeon. After qualifying from Jordan University of Science and Technology in 1996, he moved to the UK in 1997 and was awarded a PhD in Surgical Oncology from the University of Nottingham. Thereafter, he had his basic surgical training at St James Hospital in Leeds, and subsequently undertook specialist hepato pancreato biliary (HPB) and laparoscopic surgery training in Liverpool. In 2009 he completed his HPB and laparoscopic surgery training at the internationally renowned HPB unit in Liverpool. Mr Al-Sarireh is currently the Clinical Lead for Surgery at Swansea Bay University Health Board working out of Morriston and Singleton Hospitals in Swansea.
Professor Al-Sarireh continues to manage general surgical problems but has developed a specialist interest in biliary (gallbladder), liver and pancreas surgical problems. He has extensive experience in endoscopic (magic eye) and laparoscopic (keyhole) management of all aspects of general surgical problems. This includes keyhole surgery for all types of abdominal wall hernia, gallbladder surgery and anti-reflux surgery, as well as extensive experience in performing more advanced complex laparoscopic procedures for pancreas, liver, spleen and bowel.
As well as being involved in educational projects, being on the faculty of several societies including the WIMAT which provides courses for laparoscopic and endoscopic training, Professor Al-Sarireh is also on the review panels for the British Journal of Surgery. He continues to be actively involved in research and has recently established a research group in the Institute of Life Science, University of Swansea about pancreas cancer.
He is a member of the Great Britain and Ireland Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary association (GBIHPBA), Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (AUGIS), The Pancreatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland (Panc Soc) and the Royal College of Surgeons as well as the International Hepato-Pancreato Biliary Association (IHPBA).
Professor Al-Sarireh also runs an active Medico-legal practice where he provides medico legal reports and acts as an expert witness.
