Mr Shibu Krishnan is a specialist Consultant Hip and Knee Surgeon with a high-volume joint replacement practice in Buckinghamshire. His private practice is based at The Chiltern Hospital, Great Missenden, The Shelburne Hospital, High Wycombe, and Spire Thames Valley Hospital, where he treats patients with hip and knee arthritis, sports injuries and other conditions affecting the hip and knee.

His practice has a particular focus on minimally invasive total hip replacement and robotic-assisted total knee replacement, alongside conventional hip and knee replacement, partial knee replacement, complex primary joint replacement and revision hip and knee surgery.

Minimally invasive hip replacement

Mr Krishnan has particular expertise and extensive experience in minimally invasive total hip replacement. He uses tissue-sparing surgical techniques intended to minimise unnecessary disruption to the muscles and soft tissues surrounding the hip while achieving accurate and stable positioning of the hip replacement.

His aim is to combine a less invasive surgical approach with the fundamental principles of successful hip replacement: accurate reconstruction of the hip, stable implant positioning and restoration of function.

Robotic-assisted knee replacement

Mr Krishnan has particular expertise in robotic-assisted total knee replacement and offers robotic knee replacement at The Chiltern Hospital.

Robotic technology allows detailed planning of the operation and provides the surgeon with additional information during surgery to assist with accurate bone preparation, implant positioning and individualised balancing of the knee.

The technology assists the surgeon rather than performing the operation independently. Mr Krishnan combines robotic technology with his extensive experience in conventional knee replacement to tailor the operation to the individual patient's anatomy.

Joint preservation and sports knee surgery

Not every patient with hip or knee pain requires a joint replacement.

Mr Krishnan has extensive experience in joint-preserving and sports knee surgery, including knee arthroscopy, meniscal surgery, cartilage repair and restoration and ACL reconstruction. He has performed more than 1,000 knee arthroscopies and undertook specialist research and fellowship training in cartilage regeneration.

This breadth of experience allows him to consider the full range of options when assessing a patient—from non-operative treatment and joint-preserving surgery through to partial, total or revision joint replacement.

Complex and revision joint replacement

In addition to routine primary hip and knee replacement, Mr Krishnan undertakes complex primary and revision hip and knee replacement surgery.

Revision surgery may be required when a previous joint replacement has become painful, loose, unstable, worn or otherwise problematic. These operations can be considerably more complex than primary joint replacement and require careful assessment, planning and specialist surgical expertise.

Specialist training

Mr Krishnan completed specialist fellowship training at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore, including a Clinical Research Fellowship in cartilage regeneration and a Lower Limb Fellowship.

He subsequently completed the British Orthopaedic Association Transitional Fellowship in hip and knee surgery, as well as further fellowship training at St Mary's Major Trauma Centre, London, and the University Clinic Münster, Germany.

This training provided experience across joint replacement, joint preservation, sports knee surgery and complex lower-limb reconstruction.

Academic and teaching credentials

Mr Krishnan has a strong interest in surgical education and academic orthopaedics. He is an Assistant Professor at St George's University School of Medicine, Grenada, and an Associate Member of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

He is an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Orthopaedic Sciences and a longstanding reviewer for The Bone & Joint Journal. He has published research relating to cartilage restoration and joint replacement and remains involved in undergraduate and postgraduate surgical education.

Approach to patient care

Mr Krishnan believes that treatment should be tailored to the individual rather than simply to an X-ray or scan.

Where appropriate, he considers non-operative treatment and joint-preserving procedures before recommending joint replacement.
