After a diagnosis of Osteoarthritis in my big toe in October 2016 from my GP I was advised to rest and refrain from my passion for running. I sorted a referral and had a consultation with Mr. Pillai from the Manchester Foot and Ankle Clinlc. He gave me a number of options, all of which were explained in fine detail. My decision was to have the "Cartiva " procedure, which is the cleaning of the toe cartilage and replacing it with an artificial one. I undertook an x-ray, scan and the operation was performed in less than 3 weeks from the first consultation. Surgery was a day case discharge followed by 2 weeks of immobilsation and a further 4 weeks of heel walking. After 6 weeks i was able to walk comfortably and after 10 weeks i started running twice a week. I had a stiffness in the toe due to myself not exercising the joint while in the recovery stage so after the 12th week post operation I had a Cortizone / manipulation procedure. After a further 1 week rest I began running 20 miles a week and to date I have raced 5 km, 10 km and a 1/2 marathon without any toe pain. I would like to say during my time with Mr. Pillai as I found him professional, knowledgable, very easy to speak with and very patient with myself as I had many moments where I needed re-assurance. I would also like to say his Personal Assistant Neeta who arranged all my appointments and procedures at my preferred local clinics which were always accessible, encouraging and friendly.
